choroidal melanoma

Hi, I just wanted to reach out to others that are in the same situation. My mam was diagnosed with melanoma in her eye several years ago and they managed to get rid of it. This month she was diagnosed with choroidal melanoma which means it has spread to her liver and is terminal. Its such a shock! The hospital say there's nothing they can give her to prolong her life and have given her 18mths. We have been told that this is very rare so there are no trials.

We would like to take her on holiday but will struggle to get insurance.

It would be good to hear from anyone in a similar situation.

Thank you x

  • Hi teacher

I’m sorry to hear this but not sure I understand you. You say that your mum has recently been diagnosed with a choroidal melanoma and that means it has spread to her liver and is terminall. Where did you acquire the understanding that being diagnosed with a choroidal melanoma means it’s gone to her liver? That would be diagnosed via scanning eg MRI, so has your mum had a scan to diagnose metastasis in the liver as having a choroidal melanoma does not mean that cancer has inevitably spread to the liver.

  • Hi, Thank you for responding!

Yes she has had scans and the last scan shows the cancer in her liver which has come from the melanoma in her eye which has been explained by the specialists.

  • Ok I understand. I’m very sorry to hear that. I was diagnosed 2 years ago and have my next liver scan this month. I do hope that she outlives the prognosis and that you do get some quality time together as you are trying to achieve. You are probably aware of the Occumel charity. They have a Facebook group which I believe includes people with metastatis. They might be of some help to you. Prayers to you both

  • Thank you and my prayers are with you.

I don't know about the Occumel charity, or any other support this is all new to me so thank you.

My mum is very fit and well so we are thankful for that, I hope you also have a good quality of life to. It seems to be very aggressive my mams last scan in Feb showed nothing, her recent scan was June where there was a lit of it.

Its good to hear from someone in the same circumstances and I wish you and your family all the best.

  • Sorry can I ask, were you given any treatment?

  • I received plaque radiotherapy in Liverpool in June 2022. The melanoma has not recurred and liver scans have been clear so far.  Have lost some eyesight and need eye injections.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with incurable choroidal melanoma but it's great that you're trying to organise a holiday.

Unfortunately, as you've found, it can be more difficult to get reasonably priced travel insurance when a cancer diagnosis is involved. There is a travel insurance forum for cancer patients where you can look at the recommendations from others who have successfully obtained insurance.

To join, just click on the link I've created and then have a look through the threads called 'Recommended Travel Insurance' and Recommended travel insurance 2023-24', which you'll find on the first page. They are full of recommendations from other cancer patients who have got reasonably priced travel insurance.

I hope you can get some reasonably priced insurance and have a lovely holiday with your mum.
