Hi there,

I was wondering if someone could tell me what signs to look out for with ocular melanoma? My mum recently has lost quite a bit of her vision in her right eye. She went to the optician today and she said she has an extremely bad very fast developing catarax on her eye. She’s referring her on as she said she wasn’t sure it could be something going on behind the eye? Eye cancer.

im worried sick can someone share what their symptoms etc were before diagnosis?

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is an informative and supportive place to be.

It's always worrying when a health professional refers us to a specialist as we always jump to the worse-case scenario.

I haven't got this type of cancer so can't help you with any personal experience of symptoms for ocular melanoma. However, I've found this information for you from Macmillan.

I hope your mum doesn't have to wait too long for her appointment and then results and that whatever the optician has seen turns out to be a benign condition.

Do come back and let us all know how your mum gets on

  • the problem is there often are no symptoms - in my case it was deteriorating vision which i thought was just a sign of age.  but it is good that if there is something the optician has picked upon it. hopefully by now your mother will have heard from her local eye clinic who should be able to put her (and your )mind at rest one way or another.. try not to read too much online as some sites even support groups sometimes look at worse case scenarios which isn't really  helpful - there is one i totaly avoid.
