Worried

  1. Hi, I’m new to the group 38yo and worried about ongoing symptoms. Extremely heavy and lengthy bleeding with large clots  for around the last 6-7 months, lower back pain, lower abdominal heaviness & cramps, nausea. Recently new symptoms include heaviness in abdomen after sex as well as pink discharge simultaneously. Last screening 2years ago which was clear, clear transvaginal US, clear swabs for infection. Only input from Gynae is that he is going to carry out endometrial ablation & sterilisation… no other examination carried out this decision is based on heavy bleeding (bleeding after sex is new, only had for the last 2 months). Spoke to my GP about my concerns of Cervical cancer to be told “ when the gynaecologist operates he will look for anything abnormal” !! I’m hoping for some advice, and is this normal protocol given my  symptoms & concerns? Thank you
  • HHello Mrs14 and welcome to the group.

I’m sorry that I don’t have any relevant experience of the procedures you are about to have to give any advice on that. I’m surprised no-one is going to have a look at your cervix before doing anything else, given your symptoms, just to make sure that there are no issues there. Did the gynae do this at all? Did they know about bleeding after sex?

I’m not suggesting that I think you have cervical cancer, but my experience was lots of tests being done to give an exact diagnosis before going ahead with any treatment. I’m not sure if any of the other ladies might have any experiences to report back with, but I’d also suggest joining the womb cancer group too and posing your question there as some of the ladies might have had similar experience.

I can see why you’re concerned....have you actually been given any diagnosis of your symptoms at all so far? xx

  • Thank you for your reply. Gynae are not aware of bleeding after sex as it’s a new symptom that wasn’t apparent when I last had a consultation. No examinations by gynae. My GP & practice nurse are aware of bleeding afters sex as well as the other symptoms.. again been told “wait until your op they will look for anything sinister then” . The nurse said how does gynae know you need surgery if he’s not examined you ? My thoughts exactly, surgery based on heavy lengthy periods!! No diagnosis given ! I will certainly join the womb cancer chat too thank you x

  • Gosh, this is very strange. I don’t think I would be happy undergoing surgery with no diagnosis and no examination. I think on the basis of your symptoms I would be pushing for the gynae to look at my cervix. Having an op first and then looking in case there’s something sinister seems a back to front way to do things, but womb cancer is treated differently from cervical cancer. However,  you don’t have a diagnosis of cancer or anything else so far! So of course it may be something much less sinister. I hope you can get some answers and can be reassured before you have any surgery. xx

  • Thank you. I’m going to chase things up and push for an examination! I’ve also had a reduced appetite for the last 3 weeks, possibly with worry. I’m baffled at how the whole issue has been dealt with. During my appointment with the gynaecologist, I told him I was still bleeding after 6 weeks…his reply “it’s par for the course”!!!!! I’m leaking through super plus tampons in the space of. 30-40 mins sometimes, I passed a clot the length of my little finger around an inch wide about a fortnight ago x

  • Too often we are told it’s “par for the course” when it’s actually not! I would push to be examined too, and to have an accurate diagnosis. You deserve that. xx

  • Hi, I had my appointment with the GP this afternoon..a different one to the previous 3 I’ve seen, I explained my history & concerns & that neither during my US scan or swabs was my cervix looked at. The GP examined me and advised my cervix looked very red and inflamed, she may have put it down to hormones from contraceptives, however I’ve not been in any form of contraception for around 7 years or so. She is making an urgent referral following today’s examination, I’m so frustrated that it’s taken numerous appointments to simply have my cervix looked at. Now I don’t know how to feel, a lot of mixed emotions & a waiting game. Has anyone any advice having been in this position? She also said they could be Cin1 cells, again any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you x

  • Hi Mrs14

Well, that’s progress! A red and inflamed cervix is fairly common and not connected with cancer. Sometimes the cells from the inside of the cervix grow on the outside, and they are glandular cells which are red-this is called cervical ectropion, so it could be that, again not cancer.

CIN1 cells are abnormal cells caused by the HPV virus, and can regress without treatment. They are pre cancerous, not cancer. All in all, nothing is sounding sinister at this point in my experience, but it’s good that you are finally getting a referral to be properly checked out. The gp has done the right in listening to you and referring you, so you shouldn’t have to wait long for your appointment now thank goodness. x

  • Hi Sarah

If I could butt in here just to congratulate you. Due to your (once again) great advice it looks like Mrs14 is getting the examinations she rightly deserves! Sometimes we need a wee push in the right direction(I know I sure did) to get answers. You're a wealth of information and encouragement. Well done ClapClap
