Random appointment made for me 2 weeks after colposcopy

Hi,

Ill try and keep it brief... I have hpv, was picked up on a smear as i was pregnant with my oldest 4 years ago, after having my 2nd 2 years ago i had a colposcopy due to low grade changes and a punch biopsy was done. A year later had another smear and high grade dyskaryosis was found. Had another colposcopy two weeks ago and lletz. The nurse said she was happy she had removed it all and couldnt see anything sinister.

Today i got a notification through patient knows best on my nhs app that ive got an appointment, 15 mins with a nurse next Thursday. Thats all it says. I called the gynaecology team at the hospital to ask what it was about and they said it would be too soon for my results to have come back and that if it was anything untoward the appt wouldnt be in the GAU and it would be with a consultant, not a nurse.

Has anyone else had this, and knows what it might be? Im freaking out with worry because the appt is less than a week away, which normally isnt a good sign, and theres no info to be found as to why ive been asked to attend! Its now the weekend so i cant get hold of anyone else to try and work it out, just hoping someone here may have an idea?

  • Hi  and welcome to the group.

It may be something as simple as appointments being made automatically after someone has a LLETZ treatment but it’s hard to know for certain. Normally you would expect an appointment to discuss the results of the LLETZ to ensure after analysis of the tissue at the lab that everything has been removed successfully with a clear margin. If not, there might need to be a discussion about additional treatment.

You may get replies here from others who have been in a similar situation, but ultimately everyone’s situation is unique to them and timings of appointments vary between different clinics.

I understand it’s worrying to get an appointment with no explanation, but it’s not too long to wait until you’re seen and get some answers. It’s unusual for any clinic to give out much information over the phone, so you may not be able to find out more before the appointment. I hope you’ll let us know how you get on, and that you get some reassurance when you attend.

  • Thank you. I work in the NHS myself so I know theres no set rule for everyone but when we send out appts we at least leave contact numbers incase people have queries.

The other issue is its in a hospital 3 hours away as our closest is undergoing refurbishments so it's a very long trip on my own, especially if its bad news. I do have hubby but we cant both take a day off. I just wish theyd consider how worrying these things are.

    Thank you for replying x

  • Oh my-that is long way to go. It’s really difficult when you’re not told anything and then don’t have anyone to call to ask. I must admit, I’ve always known what all my appointments were for in advance and I’ve had to deal with several different hospitals in different counties.

Have you got a friend or another relative who could come with you? Do you have transport? I have gone to one results appointment on my own but always went with my partner to everything else as it’s good to have that support and for there to be an extra pair of ears so you hopefully don’t miss anything you’re told if it’s not good news.

  • Well this is it, if its results my husband would go with me, but as ive been told its too early for results to have come through, we cant both get time off and go for what may be a check up or who knows what. Its so difficult to know what to do when you don't know what its for. I am quite annoyed theres no explanation at all, obviously my mind is covering all options but looks like i wont know until i go.

  • Sorry you’re going through a worrying time. Just to say i had an appt booked 2 weeks after my LLETZ which was when i knew it wasnt good news, turned out it was early stage adenocarcinoma BUT it was with a consultant gynae not just a nurse so your situation sounds different. Hopefully all is ok, its annoying they cant tell you mire and 3 hours is such a long way to go for a 15 min appt, pity they cant do these things via zoom or something! Hope all turns out ok for you x

  • Hi BaconBadger,

Sorry you have this worry. If it was me I would be phoning again. Do you know that the original person you spoke to is 100% reliable, it seems strange that they would know for sure that it was too early for results. I think you are entitled to some more information, specially in view of a 3 hour journey. If not about results and they don't need to examine you  could it be dealt with over phone? Would that be better for you?.

I found on Patient Knows best there is usually an appointment letter which provides more detail.

Hope you can get the information you need.

  • There is a letter on patient knows best but with barely any information and under details it just said how much a missed appointment costs the nhs and to cancel if I cant attend.

I got a letter in the post today and that didnt shed any light either, only it was for a consultant clinic with the name of the consultant crossed out and the nurses name written in in pen.

  • Thanks for replying, hope you are doing ok.

I wouldn't be suprised if it was bad news as its changed from moderate to high grade in only a year, its just the unknown, and not being able to speak to anyone all weekend thats awful. The letter doesnt say anything, not to discuss results, nothing, and the nurse had said she couldn't see anything sinister when she did it so i have no idea what to think, im between it may just be to discuss future plans as ive got hpv, or the cells were cancerous but have got them all to we need to check its not spread so heres an mri etc

  • Honestly its the hardest time waiting to know whats going on, i really think if it was bad news you would be seeing a consultant but obviously i dont know that x try to find a way to put it in a box and do things you enjoy until you have your appt, i spiralled with the stress and fear which isnt helpful x whatever it is you will cope with it but this not knowing is very hard, i really think they should tell us more before these appts because the stress can be awful and if things are ok you go through that for nothing x good luck, i really hope you get good news xx

  • Thank you.

Can I ask, did you have any indications of your result? Side effects or anything beforehand?

You are right, ive tried to distract myself all weekend, but then jump back on Google which i know is bad.
