Surgery for secondary

Hi I was diagnosed with Lobular bc in December 24 and was told I’d needed a mastectomy due to size of mass.  Whilst I was trying to decide whether to have reconstructive or not my CT scan showed lesion on spine so surgery was now not an option and I began systemic treatment with Palbo and letrozole.  Scans have shown that the breast area is shrinking and the spine lesion has remained stable with no further spread.  We wondered if surgery to the breast was now being considered and the oncologist said they’d discuss at MDT.  They have come back and said palliative mastectomy could now be recommended.  It wouldn’t extend survival but could help with local control of the primary.  I’m really not sure what to decide and wondered if anyone else had been offered mastectomy with secondary.

  • Hi Bonnie2

I'm Daisy53 one of the Community Champions on the breast cancer and triple negative breast cancer forums, I also help out here and on some of the other forums if I can.  While I don't have an answer for you I noticed that you haven't had any replies yet so I thought I'd reply to you to suggest that if you haven't already that you put your question into the breast cancer forum which I noticed that you are also a member of.  The breast cancer forum is busier than this one so hopefully someone there will be able to give you the answer you are looking for.

     Best wishes

  • Hi Bonnie I am not in same boat as you.  I have secondary breast cancer with bone mets.  I had breast cancer in 2013 and had lumpectomy, chemo and radiotherapy then.  Was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in September 24 but there is no sign of it in the breast now just in bones.  What a hard decision to make.  If scan shows breast area is shrinking can you not delay mastectomy to see if it disappears altogether.  Maybe discuss with oncologist why they are recommending it now.  Good luck with your decision and I wish I could have been more help.  Big hugs.

  • Thank you so much for your reply Lee.  Yes a really big decision I feel maybe I shouldn’t rush into anything.  Glad you have also had a great response to your treatment.

  • Hi Bonnie I also think it is not a good idea to rush things.  When is your next oncology appointment or scan hopefully it will have shrunk even more. I have lobular as well.
