I’m on anastrozole and wondering about a new pain on side of hip. I went for walk on Tuesday and was in pain since then, 2 days. Not long I know but wondering if it’s to do with meds or my age, 66.
feel silly asking breast care nurse but might have to! I’m aware of it sitting and in bed but not bad enough to stop sleep. It’s more painful when getting up from chair and walking, hope it’s just age related. Don’t want to go to hospital....
thanks

Hi Jayhay welcome to the forum and sorry to hear how worried that you are. That group of drugs The Aromatase Inhibitors are designed to shut off the supply of Oestrogen and we seem to retain a small amount even after the menopause. You will know Im sure that the drugs also cause bony pain and are known for it as a side effect so this could be what is causing the pain for you.
It could just be that you may have overdone the length of the walk or it could be the start of Osteoarthritis. If it persists I would give the GP a ring as they can send you for a bone scan to offer some re-assurance for you.
Sending some hugs your way for now.xxxx
Hi jayhay
I have the same problem just now. My hip became sore after a walk about 2 months ago. My ct scans show stable and bone scan showed slight progression on the opposite side to the pain so I’m not understanding. They have me in for an MRI to get a more detailed look at things so will know more after that. I have upped my pain relief and I’m trying lidocaine patches. The oncologist yesterday gave me a low dose steroid to see if that helps while I’m waiting on scan. Mine is the same at night- I can’t sleep on that side. I either sleep on other side or on my back with pillows in various places to support. I find the mornings the sorest until I walk it off a bit and move about. No idea what’s going on! If it helps I can let you know how I get on when I have scan and results and what my team think?

Hi Jo
thanks that would be good to hear how you get on.
i have some exercises to do for the hip. My care nurse said it’s unusual to bone pain from anastrozole on the hip, it usually is a joint in arm or leg.
im already unusual as I took tamoxifen for 13 years!
im always aware of the pain, and is worse after a walk or exercise. Hey ho
havent a date for either bone density or CT scan yet

Hi. I have exactly the same sort of pain. I have secondaries in pelvis & spine & have been worrying that it must be progressing as I wake up with pain when sleeping on my side. I went for a 2.5 mile walk two days ago, (the furthest I've done for a long time), and could hardly walk yesterday because of pain in hip. I've just had a CT scan so waiting for results. Never thought it could be a side effect, will wait & find out from oncologist.on Friday.
Hi Angel-b
thank you for sharing, I still have hip pain and was much worse after walking an hour a day Monday to Friday last week! I had so much pain Friday evening!
ive wanted to keep moving and walking.
I have a oncology phone call later today so will see what he says, but I will mention you and Jo6 with pain in hip.
I have exercises for osteoarthritis but haven’t seen the doctor who suggested this.
im tired with not as much energy to work in the garden, spent half the time I usually do! I sketch or sew or read for rest and ease pain.
not myself over last couple of weeks...

Hi all
i have been booked in for a bone scan, was last Friday, then I have bone density and CT scan. Then with help from GP I have an oncology call after all that.
my hip is still painful and sometimes feels that it will give way, and I am aware that I limp when pain is higher.
any news from you all?
I haven’t the energy I had last year, it all seems to have happened after taking anastrozole, but may be coincidence. Will have to be patient and pace myself.
thanks all
