I'm unsure if I should post here on in the bladder cancer forum.

My wife's secondary breast cancer metasasized to the liningof her bladder last year. A nephrostomy for her left kidney was inserted last September. Chemotherapy finished in January, with scans back in December showing improvements.

A replacement nephrostomy given in December and now today she went in to have another replacement. The radiologist tested if the nephrostomy could be removed by inserting some dye. It wasn't a success so another replacement.

My wife Nikki really wants it removed as she is unable to shower properly. We're wondering if a nephrostomy is permanent or not? What can she do to help.

  • Good morning, Bazza7676.

I am Jamie one of the online champions and normally found in the kidney cancer forum. I noticed you had not had a reply yet. So hoping my response will help bump it back up.

A nephrostomy tube can be perminate or short term all depending greatly on individual cases and circumstances. I am have a link to our ask a nurse forum. Here you can ask this question and they are better placed to answer, but does take a couple of days to reply.

Just click on this link Ask a Nurse

You could also ask her urology nurses as they will be able to offer some other ideas like a dressing or something which can cover the area whilst showering. Again they are the best people to ask.

Hope this helps and your wife finds something so she can showing more comfortable with out the worry of the tube being in place or knocked.

Please let us know if you need anything else or support.

    Best wishes,

    Jamie
