I have just finished my 6 cycles of chemotherapy for triple positive, stage 1 breast cancer, and the next step for me is surgery (lumpectomy).
I have been told that my surgery will take place in mid-March, which will make it 6 weeks from the end of chemo to the surgery date. I am concerned that due to the timeframe, there's a chance that any traces of my tumour could start to grow again, and spread to my lymph nodes, or mean the surgery will be more substantial than they are planning for...?
Has anyone else been in the same position and what was your experience?
Hi Trooper
I'm Daisy53 one of the Community Champions on the breast cancer forum. I'm sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with breast cancer. It's normal practice to have you wait for a few weeks after the end of chemo for surgery. It's to give you time to recover from chemo before surgery. It's highly unlikely that traces of your tumour will regrow while you wait for surgery or that it would spread to the lymph nodes.
Wishing you the best of luck with your surgery.
Best wishes

Thank you for your reply. It's good to hear that your surgery went well! Take care xx
I so understand how you feel but you do need time to heal a little from chemotherapy and give your body time to recover. You have stage 1, so it is very contained and early and the chemo does continue to work even after you have finished it. So that is so positive Mid March is only 4 ish weeks, so that sounds a really effective timeframe but I do appreciate your worries . I am waiting on radiotherapy and have had to wait tto heal from an operation first and I have also finished my chemotherapy. The waiting is all part of the treatment plan, I try to look at it like that
Thank you, that's really reassuring. I'll be having radiotherapy too after my operation...hope yours is going well.
All the best X
hi Trooper22d80290 - I had chemo, then surgery (therapeutic mammoplasty and SN removal in Jan as I had one positive lymph node originally). it was exactly 6 weeks from end of chemo to surgery date. like you, I worried that cancer would grow again whilst waiting for surgery - but my surgeon reassured me that the chemo keeps working for a while anyway - and that I need to recover from chemo first - so no immediate rush as such. One thing she also said - 'you have been through the worst bit'...she was so right. surgery is a breeze in comparison. radiotherapy next.
Hope that reassures you and that you are recovering well from chemo, getting your strength back.

Thanks for sharing - I didn't realise that chemo keeps working for very long after it's given, so that's reassuring.
I think I'm also feeling impatient, now that chemo has finished, to get back to 'normal' as soon as possible...even though I feel like the worst bit is over with, there's still a long way to go with surgery, then radiotherapy, then HER2 injections for a few months...I am trying to hurry it all along. I need to slow down and be a little patient I think
Thank you, and all the best with your radiotherapy and ongoing recovery X
