Private or NHS

I had a mastectomy a week ago and the Histology confirmed its a 14mm lump, no node involvement and it hasn't invaded blood vessels. Im seing my oncologist on Tuesday who might recommend Chemotherapy.

Just as background, I had a stage 1 Grade 3 Breast cancer with clear margins last year and had a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and was on Tamoxifen.

Since this is a recurrence (although its grade 2 this time), I have a feeling they will recommend taking Chemotherapy.

Thanks to my office, I have private insurance and had surgery, radiotherapy and doctors appointments privately. But Im wondering whether the care is better at NHS? Also is there any difference in drugs and the way they administer Chemotherapy between private and NHS

Thanks

  • Hi, I had my treatment privately.  For the first 2 chemo sessions, this took place at the local NHS hospital (in case of any reaction) The further 4 chemo sessions were done at home, by a provider called Sciensus.  There was no difference to the drugs offered to me and my personal view is that if I can leverage private treatment I am freeing up the NHS for someone else.  Best wishes.

  • Hi Irishgirl16,

Thanks for sharing your experience. Even my oncologist said she could arrange to givee it at home if I have to get it. But I a bit nervous about that. Your arrangement gave another option I could look at. If Im to travel to the hospital the doctor is working I have to go to South London (I live in North) and it would take 1-1.5 hours by car, which is a lot of travelling. So I need to find an alternative if Im to stick with private medical.

Your way of thinking is very selfless I must sayHeart eyes

    Thanks
