Inflammatory response to zoledronic acid

Hi

I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar with their first dose of Zoledronic acid?

I had the infusion Thursday, by Friday morning I had a temp of 39 and was in bed shivering with aches and nausea. That subsided by Saturday lunchtime and since then I’ve just felt a bit stiff and fatigued. All of which I expected.

Roll on day 7 and I wake up with huge knees and pain running down the back of the knee cap making walking and stairs very difficult. I also have stiffness and swelling in my ankles and fingers. I spoke to my BC nurse who advised ibuprofen, movement and ice. Things are easing a little in the knees but this evening on day 8 , I’ve developed hives around my mouth and neck!

Has anyone else’s immune system gone nuts with this drug? After the chemo, the Kadcyla, the surgery and radiation… I thought this was supposed to be the easy bit??

  • I’m due my 6th infusion in January. I can’t tell what the first one did as I got it at the same time as an EC infusion, but the 4 I’ve had on their own have given me aching, shivering, unwell feeling for about 24 hrs starting around 12 hours after the infusion.
I know that the most common pattern is that there is a reaction first time, then nothing really perceptible, but not me. What I get has been pretty much the same each time and tolerable.  For all I know I could have been worse with the first one but, what with the EC and its accompanying meds and jabs I do not know as I had a grim 3-4 days with that chemo anyway.
Definitely talk to Oncology/Breast nurse as a first off I’d say and see how your current reaction settles down. At least the infusions are 6th months apart and you’ve got time to get advice on this.

All the very best TJGS, this phase can be very trying, not always helped by the fact that people think you’re pretty much finished the treatment! xx

  • I meant speak again to nurse! I had flaky skin rash and itching face and mouth, settled down with mild steroid cream and piriton but that set in 3 -4 weeks after finishing the 12 weekly paclitaxel chemos.

That’s another thing, with some reactions taking time, and if you’ve had a lot of treatment and drugs you’ve never had before..Shrug tone2‍,  but your Zoledronic reaction does seem a bit “extra”.
