To cold caps or not cold cap

So I'm due to start EC-T approximately mid to late May. Portacath to be inserted. ECG & ECHO etc still to be done too but they mentioned a cold cap.

Now I've never been a fashionable person or bothered with make up or fussing about my hair, currently less than a inch long. So I'm wondering if it's worth using one?

Any advice?

  • Hi JD70, there are lots of thoughts about this on the Hair Loss thread - I've posted there. Very best wishes for successful treatment, whatever you decide to do. xxx

  • I had cold caps. Its a bit uncomfortable especially the first 15 minutes and prolongs your treatment session because you have to have it on for a while before and afterwards.

My hair  became really thin with bald patches which I covered with a short bob style. It helped me personally at the time to have hair but looking back photos (3 yrs on) my hair was awful. In  hindsight I think it would have been better not to bother.

If your hair is short you will most likely get bald bits you can't comb over because the caps are not always completely tight.

    Best wishes x

  • Thank you for the advice. With a less than 1 inch crop already, it's not looking good ...

  • Hi JH70. I am currently cold capping. I previously had very thick in a long bob. As others have said, once you get past the initial 15mins, I have found it manageable- it the chin strap that I find annoying.

I have definitely lost a good 60% of my hair, which I wasn't expecting, but, apart from some balding patches on the top, I think most people wouldn't realise how much I'd lost.

It is meant to help re-growth, which is why I'm sticking with it. It is colder with less hair, but they put a surgical cap on my head first which helps.

If you are unsure, I would suggest you try it. I was given the option to do that at my pre chemo chat. And the care team said you can change your mind at any point.

Good luck with your treatment. I started on EC and am now part way through paclitaxel xxx

  • I'm certainly going to give it a go. I got told in last oncology nurse visit, if I don't ask for one on the 1st session, you can't get it

Thanks for all the advice guys

  • Hi I gave it ago but bailed out after second session as cap gave me headache and my hair was falling out. Glad I tried it though just in case it worked.

  • So give it a try is the consensus...

Got a chat with the wig lady soon too. My daughter wants me to get a rainbow wig. Nothing to do with it having a holiday from me when pride is on? I'm thinking brunette or slightly auburn. Always been a dark'ish blonde (before I went grey) so a complete change

  • Hi

my advice on a wig is get the most expensive one you can afford. Bought two synthetic wigs which lasted 3/4 months each. My most recent one is 70% synthetic and 30% human hair which will last a year and I alive it.

    Best wishes
