Reconstruction or not for small breast

Hi All,

I am new to this forum, i wish i had known about this forum earlier than i would have been less lonely during my chemo battle.

I just finished my chemo and was told that I need mastectomy. The doctor asked if i want reconstruction, when I want etc. I am a bit, actually a lot overwhelmed because I cant even accept the fact that I will need mastectomy yet.

Anyway, I need to decide whether to have reconstruction or not  soon otherwise my surgery will get delayed, and I am worrying my cancer will grow back again.

My breast size is quite small- A cup, clothes size 8. I am thinking, one hand, what is the point of having reconstruction when my breast is not big anyway. On the other hand, having small breast and completely flat are still different, maybe better to have reconstruction . I cant make up my mind.

I would like to know how you decided if anyone had similar experiences...

  • Hello Jen

I think the decision to have reconstruction or not is a very individual choice.

I had a single masectomy and knew right from the start that I did not want to stay flat chested.

However my new boobs will be smaller than my old boobs, which for me is fine.

I do know a few ladies who did not have reconstruction and are very happy having a flat chest.

Maybe have a look at pictures of flat chests verses reconstruction, maybe this will help you make a decision.

Talk to your surgeon, I believe if you decide to stay flat depending on your circumstances, it is possible to still have reconstruction at a later date if you change you mind. But please do check that with your surgeon, as its not always possible, depending on what treatment you have to have.

Good luck with whatever you decide

  • Thank you for your reply. I wish i knew what i want clearly like you. It's so hard to decide..

  • Hi I am wondering how old you are. I had a double mastectomy and no reconstruction (wasn't an option) I had huge breasts. I don't mind being flat, but I know I would have if I had been any younger. I was 70 when I had the mastectomy. I only wear prostheses when I swim and sometimes for important occasions.

I do believe that you can always go back later for reconstruction but I suspect it's best to get it all over with and get back to being you. Good luck with the rest of your journey x
