Waiting times for results after mastectomy

I had a SMX and SLNB 3 weeks ago for an estimated 6cm ILC following ultrasounds, punch biopsy on one enlarged node (all clear) and an MRI.

I was supposed to get my results today but the appointment was cancelled yesterday because the labs weren't back in time for the MDT last Friday. They need to arrive today or tomorrow to make this Friday's MDT otherwise it'll be another week, making it 5 weeks after surgery. I am not coping with this at all, my GP has prescribed diazepam which I'm too scared to take. The one to two week timeline I am seeing everywhere, is that fantasy? Since my operation I have seen a nurse to remove my drain and check my wound but not had contact from anyone else except to cancel the results appointment.

The surgeon requested Oncotype DX on top of the usual tests but I don't think they're waiting for that. Or is it that?

The surgeon wasn't able to see me post surgery so I have no idea what happened, how much was taken, how many nodes. I am quite small (34b) and 6cms is a large mass so I am worried it's in my chest wall and nodes and I should be starting radiotherapy in the next week or two.

Not sure there's any point calling the nurses if there are no results but it's an answering machine and I am very shy and can't bring myself to say anything when the beep happens.

Anyone else waiting this long? I am in Worcestershire.

  • Following surgery last year I waited four weeks for results. I asked but was not given any information at all until the results appointment, simply told they weren’t ready. It’s horrible waiting for results so I really feel for you and hope you’re not waiting too much longer. x

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I am sorry you suffered through this too. If it's just a random, tough luck postcode thing I can deal with it and tell my overactive imagination to calm down!

  • Hi  , I had a 5 week wait - was given an appt each week just to be told ‘sorry, results not back yet’… It is really tough. I had to have a second surgery and then results were back after 2 weeks.
I also found it difficult to call nurses (because I am not good at asking for help rather than shy). However, worth finding the courage to call to tell them how anxious you are, it may push them to chase results for you.
I have my fingers crossed that results come this week. Xx

  • I had surgery 3 weeks ago and had appointment yesterday and was told initial results from surgery, lymph nodes and size of tumor etc but they are waiting on Oncotype results, I have another appointment in 3 weeks although was told they will phone me if they come in sooner.

     Hope you hear soon

  • Thank you both, I will see if I get a call on Friday and you are right, I should definitely chase it if not. I just hate bothering anyone but I have my own business and I don't know if I can continue with it and that's adding to the stress.

  • I too heard about 2 week wait for results post mastectomy, they weren't ready at 2 weeks, I then went after 4 weeks to be told they had results but hadn't been through MDT so only got a top line which meant a re-incision was booked for the following week.  I am now 2 weeks post 2nd surgery and was very surprised to get the 2nd results at the surgical checkup - so there's no guaranteeing anything even with the same process/hospital.

I feel you stress and anxiety, the waiting genuinely is the worst part, I truly believe when you get the news, whatever it is, you'll find a way to deal with yourself. I'm so sorry you're stuck in limbo but will keep everything crossed it comes soon and goes well. Yx

  • I had a simple mastectomy 3 weeks ago and was told the results would take up to 6 weeks and the only contact I had was when the drain was removed. So I too am worried.

  • Oh I'm sorry...sounds like your team are giving out the worst case scenario and mine gave the best. I had got ready to hear the results and move to the next stage, it's so frustrating. The cancer bit I can deal with but I feel like I have no control over anything. Your BCN might know what timescales your lab is operating to at the moment? Might be worth a call to them too?

  • Yeah that's the worst part waiting and it was my BCN who gave me the timescale. I just hope that 6 weeks is the worst case scenario and I hear soon as my head is all over the place with all sorts of different things going through it X hope you are staying strong
