Hello. I'm 3 weeks post lumpectomy and am seeing the oncologist on Monday before I start Letrozole and radiotherapy etc. My cancer is hormone receptive. I am expecting be told I need my mirena taken out (ugh) and wondered if any of you were also told this? Or perhaps told you could keep it in? Thank you. This forum is so helpful x

  • You’ll get a mixed response to this if previous threads are anything to go by. I was told to remove mine immediately even though I didn’t have hormone receptive cancer. But I had breast cancer twice before I was 50 so I am high risk for all breast cancers. I’ve been told no hrt, no supplements such as sage that act by increasing oestrogen, only oil of evening primrose. After seeing others on here being allowed a variety of hrt meds and coils I questioned it with my breast consultant and they said they stand by their advice to me and I shouldn’t compare myself to others. I think wait and see what your oncologist recommends for you. All the best xx

  • Thank you for your reply and of-course you are right, I need to follow the advice of the oncologist. Moments of anxiety lead me to post   and try and hear what I want to hear!  Thank you for taking time to respond. All the best

  • My pleasure, others will offer different advice they’ve had I’m sure, there’s a good community waiting to share their experiences so always post with any worries x

  • Hi

    Hope you’re doing ok Hugging

My cancer is also hormone fed.

    Hert2neg E&P + …..,and I was advised the same as Anna1234.
I had my Mirena removed the week before my Lumpectomy and was told to stop all HRT immediately - although I did reduce my dose gradually over 4 weeks (against advice) as I felt so much better on HRT and didn’t want the crash of stopping overnight.

I’ve been told to check first any supplements I want to take, but there doesn’t really seem to be much allowed. I was advised to eat well, stay hydrated and exercise gently. Also told to stop Collagen as I used to take that too.

Once I’ve finished chemo and start radiotherapy I’ll start on Tamoxifen (to suppress all hormones) for a minimum of 5 years+

At the minute, I feel ok, but think that’s probably because I’m going through chemo and feel rubbish anyway lol.

The ‘eat well’ etc advice for me will be difficult as without the HRT my body craves all the wrong things….lol

From reading similar posts on here before it seems people get told/advised different things so it’s hard to know what’s right.

For me I loved HRT and it made me feel so much better in myself, but for the two years I took it I seemed to have other health issues start. Gynae problems, various lumps and bumps, even a skin cancer! (not a serious one) so who knows?

Good luck with your journey xxxx

  • I’m also ER & PR + , just had my DIEP surgery.  I asked (all 3) surgeons if I needed to have my Mirena removed and they said no, however, when I meet my oncologist they may have a more definitive opinion?

  • It’s quite scary when advise from Doctors etc seems to vary so much, you’d think it would be the same? Shrug tone1Huggingx

    1. Hello, I was told in no uncertain terms to have mine removed asap at my first appointment re the cancer diagnosis. It was so easy, had it done at GP centre and took 20 seconds and a cough! Please do not worry. X
  • Hi mine is hormone receptive and I had to have it removed and stop hrt. I did quite a bit of research read some research which convinced me it was the right thing to do although not enjoying the consequences. You can also ask your bc nurse who should be able to talk you through it. For me the risk level was too high but took me a while to accept it .

    • Thanks all so much for your replies. My oncologist respected my worries about having a second hormone crash (first one from hrt) by having my mirena removed and said we should take things a step at the time. So I’m day 4 (tomorrow) of 15 radiotherapy sessions and then I see her again, I’m pretty sure she’ll advise taking it out. And then she’ll put me on Letrozole. I know I’m being a bit of a wimp as all of it will prevent my cancer from coming back but I don’t want to feel rubbish for the coming years.  I’m a pretty positive person. I’m trying to think that I’ll start exercising more and eating healthily and that will mitigate any side effects,

  • Hello,  I know what you mean about not having hrt.  It is certainly a big adjustment but there are things you can do to help but just a word of advice not as good as hrt.  My cancer was also estrogen and progesterone positive 100%.  I had found out a month after I had my hormone pellets put in so actually felt good hormonal for about 4 months but then it was radiation and Anastrazole so there was no way I could go back on hrt.  I already had been exercising and eating vegan so felt that my lifestyle was healthy.  A really good podcast is menopause and cancer with Dani Binnington on YouTube.  Excellent and have learned so much.  Take care.
By the way I had been on HRT since I was 55 and got breast cancer at 71 almost 72 so felt great for a long time so feel thankful.  Also the latest studies say that women who have been on hrt and get breast cancer usually have slower growing and not as aggressive cancers.
I hope they do more research for all of us who suffer with symptoms from these drugs as many women have to feel miserable.  Well that is just my take.  Take care snd all the women on this site are great and do willing to share.
