Wishing the best to everyone for the New Year. Following a recall after a routine mammogram I had biopsy and ultrasound and received results yesterday. I have invasive ductal breast cancer, grade 3.
We are supposed to be going on holiday next week to Lanzarote. The nurse said it was ok to go as I would probably have to wait until end of Jan or beginning of Feb before I can have lumpectomy. The cancer is only 4mm at the moment but I'm concerned it could grow whilst waiting for lumpectomy and wonder if going on holiday is a good idea.
Just wanted to hear from others who have been through same as I am feeling very frightened and tearful at the moment.
Hello and Happy New Year to you too although right now you are feeling emotional and scared. Normal feelings especially at the beginning as the disbelief of having breast cancer especially if you had no symptoms is hard to believe.
My cancer was diagnosed in 2021 and I had DCIS in right breast and invasive ductal cancer in left breast stage 1 grade 2 and 3 mm tumor with 6mm DCIS . Had 2 lumpectomies and then radiation to both sides and now on anastrazole for 5 years.
I would go on vacation and don’t worry that your tumor is going to grow out of control. Since you can’t have the surgery for a bit the vacation will be nice and hopefully help you to relax.
It is not an easy time but you will get your surgery and then be on a program tailor made for you.
I feel good and believe me I had my ups and downs but all these wonderful women who shared their stories really helped. You are not alone. I live in Florida so it is nice to connect with all you gals from across the pond.

Thank you for your kind words. Gives reassurance to know others have gone through this and come out the other side. I always tried to keep fit and now I don't trust my own body. Take care xx
I know what you mean about keeping fit etc but breast cancer still can get us anyway. But one thing to remember is when you start off in good shape you are ahead of the game. I exercised after lumpectomies and when going through radiation the radiation oncologist advised only walking so I did that until I got the OK and then got back to cycling.
I know what you mean about feeling your body betrayed you. Don’t be hard on yourself as sometimes things happen no matter what good shape you are in.

Although you may not feel like it at times, please try to keep up with whatever exercise you do to keep fit. When I was first diagnosed I was too upset to go running or strength training which I had started a few months before. After a short period I forced myself to go back to it while waiting for surgery which helped hugely mentally. Two weeks after surgery I was back to gentle jogging, running soon after. By my results appointment at 4 weeks post surgery I was back to strength training with light weights which I have gradually increased and have gone on to run my first half marathon 6 months after surgery. My oncologist said there was no restriction on any activity during or after radiotherapy so I continued my usual routine.
I am 100% convinced exercise has helped me with a quick recovery and is why I don’t have any issues at all with the hormone treatment. Dr Liz O’Riordan is a massive advocate of exercise and refers to exercise as the “fourth treatment” plus there is extensive research about it reducing risk of recurrence. Although there are no guarantees exercise helps me feel in control, it has built back trust in my body and confidence in my body image. I consider it part of my ongoing treatment plan just as much as my daily tamoxifen tablet.
Ladies, thank you so much for your replies. I really enjoy exercise. I have been in a bit of a stupor since the news but I will continue with the exercise and hopefully will help me get throughthis. Thanks again for your support I know you are aware how much itmeans xx
Thank you .I had my apt brought forward to today .I was so scared it was more bad news but no cancer else where showed up on CT scan so now booked for lumpectomy and lymph nodes clearance on 21st Jan .
Not sure if happy is the right word but relieved something positive is finally happening.
Hope you won't have to wait much longer and your out cone is as positive.xx
So pleased your news was positive. I am lucky to be away on pre booked holiday at the moment which provides a bit of a distraction. I would have rather been home and got surgery out of way but they said I would have to wait until beginning of February anyway. Thank you for your good wishes. Xxxx
