Feeling terrified

I've posted in here a few times now throughout my journey and somebody has always been able to respond to give me hope! I'm feeling pretty hopeless right now so hoping I can maybe get a glimmer of hope from here!  So I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of August and have had a lumpectomy, lymph node axillary clearance and was getting ready to start chemo next week when I got told yesterday that my CT scan showed two areas of concern on my liver and spine. The doctor has ordered an urgent MRI and has told me that CT scans can sometimes show things which turn out to be normal but at the same time was telling me about how my treatment might change if the cancer has spread. Don't think I've ever felt more terrified, shocked, numb...has anybody had this happen and the MRI has been ok?? I'm so scared right now :(

  • Hi honey, sorry you find yourself in this position,  I found my lump early October and although I am yet to receive any treatment I have had multiple scans. 4 biopsies, breast MRI and full body CT scan.  CT scan highlighted small spot on the liver and lower spin.

Then had MRI of spine and liver and Monday I had a bone scan.  I get my results and treatment plan later today.

I was absolutely dreading today until I got a call arranging my pre op assessment for next week.  My hospital always seems to book the next step before I have seen my surgeon.

So in my mind I am hopeful,  if they had found any secondary cancer it would probably have been chemo before surgery rather than after the mastectomy.

CT scans can show up all sorts of hot spots, arthritis,  cysts etc, there are more harmless things these could be.

I can't say don't worry but be grateful they are being thorough,  if there is something of concern catching it early is  helpful.

Hope the tests and results are completed quickly and the results are favourable x

  • Thanks so much for replying lovely! And I'm so sorry that you're in a similar position. It's just absolutely terrifying isn't it although you have a very good mindset! I am trying to be positive but it's so friggin hard. Up until now I haven't had a CT scan , only an MRI on my breasts which makes me think they must have thought there wasn't the need for one so maybe this is nothing? Im just in such a tailspin and dreading yet more waiting as it took 3 weeks to get the ct results. Anyway, all I can do is wait and pray and I will keep everything crossed for you too xxx

  • Dear LauraPts, I had my breast surgery in February, a small lump found at my routine mammogram, unfortunately 8 lymph nodes also had cancer cells so I had chemotherapy, now awaiting RT, just started Abemaciclib, also Letrozole.

After my surgery I had a CT scan and MRI which found "issues" on my 3rd vertebrae and a couple of nodes in my lungs. They were inconclusive so I was told I would need to go through the CT/MRI process in 3 months. I had the results of the second scans in October with no change, so my oncologist said they are not concerned and not cancerous.

Please don't worry, I hope you will also get a similar results.

    Good luck

  • Hi LauraPts

I have a positive story to share with you. I was booked in for surgery early August but following an MRI on my breasts the surgery was postponed and I was told that there was a lesion on my liver. Instead of surgery I had to go for an ultrasound on my liver and was then told that I had to have an MRI on my liver. I was absolutely terrified but results cam back as a benign tumour that is apparently quite common in women.

My surgery went ahead at the end of August and have since started chemo.

i really hope things go well for you and please let us know. It really does help to talk! X

  • Hi just to say I have had both mri and Ct on my pancreas/ liver/ kidney etc - for reasons unrelated to be breast cancer. They showed small cysts which on rescanning 6 months later were…… small cysts. My oncologist once told me the problem with mri scans is that the more you scan the more you’ll find - it’s common to have cysts etc , but if they find them they have to explore everything

all the best to you / the wait is rough…..

  • Thank you for your reply Ninaj! I'm sorry to hear you went through this worry too but it's reassuring to hear you had a good outcome! Just waiting on my MRI now and somehow going to try and get through the next week or so to know more. Good luck for your RT!
