Amelia has breast cancer which has got into her bones. Five three-week cycles in she is coping really well with the Capecitabine and Denosumab and you wouldn't really know that she is ill. We have a month holiday in South Africa booked in January and she is really looking forward to being back there. However, she wants to take a one cycle break from treatment whilst we are away. She feels well but how much potential damage is there in taking a break? Is she facing a faster decline later and sooner than otherwise? I want her to have a great time but worry that there is a price. Thanks
Hi, I guess that this is a question for the oncologist. I remember asking the oncology nurse how long my chemotherapy would remain active for (I was waiting for a surgery date post chemo) and I was told 'up to four weeks after the last cycle’. I had surgery exactly two weeks afterwards, so never thought about it. It is not unusual for people to have a cycle of chemotherapy delayed, or cancelled, perhaps because of weight loss, low white cell account or other reasons and then to restart later once the issues have been addressed. But that doesn’t answer your question unfortunately, and I guess it is one for a professional. Your oncologist will have your wife’s records, and scans, and response to treatment, and may give you the personalised answer that you need. Sorry not to be of more help.
