Meeting surgeon

Hi I was very recently diagnosed with grade 2 ductal cancer. It is hormone positive but don't know yet whether it's Her2 + and also waiting for results of lymph node biopsy. I've just been given an appointment to meet a surgeon next week. Does that mean I am likely to have surgery first? Seems daft to meet a surgeon if I'm having 6 months of chemo before surgery.

  • Hi  for the majority of patients, surgery is the first line of treatment. The exceptions to this tend to be patients with triple negative breast cancer, or patients with a very large lump/lumps where shrinking it first, may give a better surgical outcome! In fact it’s usually the Surgeon who gives you the results of the mammogram/biopsies! So not sure who you received your results from?!

The decision on whether Chemo will be required is usually based on the outcome of the biopsies/size of lump and whether there is spread to the lymph nodes!

I hope this helps a little. Wishing you all the best with whatever treatment lies ahead. Best advice I can give is take things one step at a time! Once you know what’s due next ask questions then! If you try and gather too much information before you even know if that’s going to be your pathway, you’ll get swamped with lots of information which might not even apply to you! Just take things slowly!

There’s always someone on this site to offer help, advice and support. Take Care Hun. Sal xxx

  • Thank you for your reply. I didn't meet the surgeon when I got my initial results because he was in a meeting so a different consultant met with me instead. I am hoping that my other results are now ready so a treatment plan can be decided.

  • Hi, my surgeon was the first contact and gave me the biopsy results even though I had chemo first and it was after the surgeon gave me the results that I met the oncologist to discuss chemo.  Best wishes

  • My understanding is that if you are hormone + it is most likely to be Her2- so that is probably why you have been given the appt. I can’t remember the stats but my consultant told me most invasive ductal cancers are HR+ her2-
