Oncotype DX results how to make a decision about treatment

omcotype DX results I can’t decide which treatment route to accept and am going round in circles.
Good morning everyone, this is my first post. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May and so far have had a lumpectomy. I’ve recently had results of my oncotype dx test back which I’m really struggling to interpret despite a long conversation with my oncologist. I’ve been given the choice whether to have chemo or not. My RC score was 26. Distant reoccurrence risk with TAM alone 16% and group average absolute chemotherapy benefit >15%.
I feel like like a rabbit in the headlights as both the thought of having chemo and the thought of not terrify me, for me both come with huge risks and benefits and I’m strongly considering the non chemo route. I do have a background in nursing which I think on this occasion may not be helping me.
Has anyone else struggled with this decision and made the no chemo choice I feel like I’m the only one.
thank you

  • Hi you pose an interesting question. I asked about the oncotype dx at my second consultation, and got no answer. Subsequently post op the surgeon decided to to make the decision that I wouldn’t be having the test and I would need radio therapy and hormone suppressants, the multidisciplinary team hadn’t actually met. I was then left for nearly two weeks not knowing the outcome of the meeting. After speaking to my key worker who had been on leave, the tumour had indeed gone for an oncotype test. This meant the meeting booked with the oncologist has had to be delayed, the surgeon I think got carried away booking a premature meeting, and to be frank caused me stress because I had no idea what was going on.

However, I wanted the oncotype dx test because I probably would have chemo if I was on the margin or even slightly below the 25 cut off. Personally I need to throw everything at it as well as some life changing things to remain well. I am fit walk twice a day etc but would want to look at diet etc to remain on top.

so I guess it’s a very personal decision and there are no rights or wrongs just what best for you.

    I wish you well.

  • Hi

My score was 56 so the decision to have chemo was a no brainer and the decision was kinda made for me by my oncologist ( she is a straight talking. We are doing this kinda Dr) and a plan was already in place.

My head spun in the 3 weeks leading up to my 1st cycle but I do have a great team that ring after treatment.

If you have a team like mine then they will give you all the information and talk you through you options

    Wishing all the best x

  • Hi, I had a 20mm lump caught early, E+ and HER - which was removed via a therapeutic mammoplasty. I was 54 at diagnosis and post menopausal. My Oncotype DX score came back at 25.  I researched quite a bit and had decided not to have chemo unless the oncologist showed me the statistical benefits.
However, when I had the oncology meeting she agreed with me and didn’t recommend it, showing me graphs and statistics of someone similar to me.

At the end of the day nobody knows what the future will bring. It’s a statistical tool to predict risk. It could recurr with or without chemo?

I had 15 sessions of radiotherapy and now on Letrazole and Ibandronic Acid. I exercise, look after my diet and stress levels and don’t smoke or drink alcohol.

Im now living life to the full and taking holidays. Have drawn two pensions and reduced my hours at work.

Life is good and I’m happy and content with my decision. But it’s a very personal decision and only you can make it.
    Best wishes x

  • Thank you for all these posts!

After much research and discussions with my loved ones I decided to do chemo. It's a total of 4 sessions every 3 weeks. I just finished my 3rd session. My side effects have been minimal the major one was significant hair loss even though I have cold capped although I'm not losing any more so I still have some. But not kidding that's a tough one. Otherwise no nausea. After about 2 days I just feel yucky for a few days then I have to get these shots to create white blood cells. I take for 4 days. By the last day of that I have some bone pain. But I've been taking an antihistamine daily and tylenol (you call it something else there) on a schedule so that really helps. After about a week I feel pretty good. I am getting slightly anemic that's a side effect so I'm on iron pills but my doc not concerned she says will bounce back. For me I am someone who does regret decisions so I had to look at that. With an onctotype of 27 I was just above the cut off so I've gone for it. The end result will be what it will be but I will be closer to 11% in 9 years which is basically what someone with a 24 or 25 oncotype is.

I'm 65 and very healthy. I walk every day. I will plan on doing more exercise once I've recovered and on the latrozole to prevent osteoporosis. Maybe take some jazzersize just to increase cardio.

Wishing you all well with decisions. I agonized but am going for it.

  • Sorry you’re having this dilemma too.

my DX score was 23 and at 49 I’ve decided not to go the chemo route, but will have leuprorelin injections to bring on menopause alongside tamoxifen.

It was an easy decision but I still second guess myself.
