Everything tastes disgusting and feels awful in my mouth due to chemo

I am really struggling. I have had my 2nd cycle of Docetaxil, Carboplatin and Phesgo.  Everything tastes like acid and feels like gritty glass in my mouth.  I can tolerate cola to drink - really smooth ice cream.
Is there anything I can do to take this taste and feeling out of my mouth.

thank you x

  • I found citrus flavours good - frozen pineapple chunks or even lemon slice and mint in bottled water. I preferred Lidl own brand water. It was a very particular taste, reminded me of being pregnant all over again !. Books like cooking for cancer help you find more flavoursome foods you can enjoy. But BBC good food is a great free resource. I couldn’t stand bland foods like roast dinners, and boiled veg, but loved stews with herbs and spices in. I hope you can find some things that you enjoy or even simply tolerate for nutrition too. Penny Brohn has a nutritionist you could speak with for ideas, and your local Macmillan centre too. They even offer cooking for cancer courses in my local centre. That was helpful too. And if all else fails, you can have 6 free treatments at your local Macmillan - perhaps a bit of pampering will make you feel brighter. Chemo brings its side effects and a bit of normal can help x

  • I had breast cancer in 2022. I had a lumpectomy and removal of lymph nodes followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy then Letrozole which I am taking for 7 years. My sense of taste changed drastically with the chemo and became even more peculiar with the Letrozole. Everything tastes slightly tinny and acidic and I can no longer eat the fruit I love i.e oranges, lemons, grapefruit, melon, apples but I can just about manage pineapples and bananas although they also taste wrong. Some foods I develop a craving for then just as quickly lose the craving and simply can’t face them and end up having to bin things or, in the case of oatcakes or crackers, I feed them to the birds or mix them with my dog’s food. Sometimes I will be halfway through eating something and it will suddenly taste awful and that is really annoying! So I’m sorry to say the taste thing may last a long, long time. Yogurt and cereal seem okay!

  • I have also just had my second round of tcph and my taste is terrible - all sweet and sour gone - couldn’t even taste lemon juice on a pancake. I’m at day 11 now since the infusion and still feeling rubbish. Struggling to eat or drink at all most of the time. I don’t think 6 rounds of this is sustainable for me.
