Waiting time for Oncology referral

Confirmed grade 3, stage 3 IDC following recent lumpectomy on 17th Jan. Referred to oncology for adjuvant treatment and advised there’s a wait time of around 10 weeks. I am shocked! Is this normal?! I was upgraded from grade 2 so I’m understandably upset and the wait time is excruciating.

  • Hello Katy37

It is shocking for sure. My first oncology appointment was 7 weeks post op. My actual treatment will start 11 weeks post op. My journey started 6 months ago and I have had to fight to get appointments. Some Trusts are better than others in terms of time frames. Best wishes

  • Hi Katy 37,

this does seem along time. I was also upgraded from a  grade 2 to a 3 and I understand how anxious you must feel. Did you have lymph node involvement and what size was your tumour. If you are T2 or above with  lymph node involvement I would contact PALS at your hospital and express your concerns. Other options are to go to another hospital which has a shorter wait. The biggest reduction in recurrence risk is having surgery. I required chemo which started April 12th, my total node clearance was February 23rd and radiotherapy was late August 2023.

  • Sorry to hear you have had to wait a long time as well. I’ve been recovering from surgery etc but I’m thinking surely this can’t be right?! I first went to GP 9th November so I’m 3 months in and contacted oncology today who ‘don’t know’ when my appointment will be x

  • Tumour was 2.3cm and 5 out of 13 lymph nodes were positive. Surgical team were just so blasé like you’re NED, don’t worry about it. But surely waiting all that time is not right?? Any happiness from getting good margins has been completely overshadowed by the anxiety of being upgraded coupled with waiting so long. Thank you - Im going to contact PALS tomorrow x
