I was diagnosed with Stage 1, Grade 2, Lobular Cancer ER and PR positive (both score 8) HER2 negative. Tumour size is small: 10mm on ultrasound, and 15mm on mammography. I am likely to be node negative. I'm 71 in May and have extreme hospital anxiety. My recommended pathway is lumpectomy, followed by radiotherapy and Letrozole for 5 years. However the consultant said that Letrozole only is an option, although it is not a cure. In 90% of cases with high hormone receptivity it is effective in arresting the tumour and sometimes shrinking it. She said that they could monitor me closely for six months to assess how well the tumour was responding. Has anyone else taken this option?
Not done that, but there is a well known danger of being under treated because of age. It's grade 2 and relatively small, but it could still be in your nodes. About 25% of 'clear' nodes aren't - that happened to me!
Would you consider skipping radiotherapy but doing surgery? Letrozole can be challenging for a lot of people and gives only a small gain after surgery. Check the tool used https://breast.predict.nhs.uk/tool
Letrozole was given during covid prior to surgery, so there's some data on it slowing or shrinking lumps, but breast cancer is sneaky, and has a habit of lingering or spreading so is try to treat it as effectively as you can cope with.:/
