Hi you wonderful brave women!
I should be having surgery sometime this month after an MRI scan. My question is what can I do to prepare, plan, and buy in advance that will help me get through the process and the convalescence? My spirit is high and my support network is amazing so it’s mainly the practical things I need help with.
thank you so much. Hugs to you all. Xxxx
Get yourself some post surgery bras and remember you can get vat free from places like marks and Spencers and Asda. Also get some front fastening pyjamas if you don't have as will be easier to deal with post surgery if you can't lift arms. Maybe if you have a family batch cook some meals and freeze them? Get yourself a little table that will either fit over your bed or put by sofa so you can put phone meds etc in easy reach. And get a diary so you can write in every day things like side effects pain etc. Will also work well if chemotherapy joins the journey as you can note things like temperature side effects etc.
All the best with surgery
Thought of something else - buy a digital thermometer. Handy for monitoring if you have chemo
Hi there, a few things I can think of.
As well as front fastening tops, leggings can be much easier than trying to manage with buttons or zips if your movement is restricted.
Crop top type bra tops are really good for sleeping in to restrict movement for a few days post surgery.
Make sure you have a good digital thermometer to keep an eye on your temperature in case of infection.
Completely agree with having some pre cooked meals in the freezer, and I'd include some soup in case you're not super hungry.
Make sure you have stocked up on painkillers.
And it might be difficult to drive, so having someone on hand for some shopping could be useful.
Hope this helps, best wishes.
I think that you can maybe exercise so that you are in good shape physically and emotionally. Organise yourself some soft button front PJS and clothes to go home in. An extra long phone charging wire can be helpful too. A little cushion to place under your seatbelt on the way home is helpful. A heart shaped mastectomy cushion can make you more comfortable and support your arm on that side. I read on cancer active website that there are other things to help prepare for surgery and protect you during it; have a look and see what you think.
