Hello.
I had breast cancer in 2020, aged 47. Had surgery, radiotherapy, and was prescribed Tamoxifen. I had further surgery last year to reduce non-cancer-breast down to the size of cancer-breast. All was well, or so I thought. Just had my third annual post-cancer mammogram and was recalled because there was some suspicious new growth in cancer-breast. I attended for further mammogram and ultrasound and was told that there is indeed some highly suspicious activity that's either the return of the cancer or the development of radial scarring. (Had to Google that one.) I need a biopsy too, but they can't fit me in until 20th Sept!
Must admit that I'm struggling with holding the uncertainty for so long. When I was originally diagnosed, I had the biopsy the same day as everything else. I guess these are the times we're living in. (No shade on the NHS: I'm an NHS clinician myself, and do my very best to help people in non-ideal circumstances.)
Even if it's radial scarring, I'll still need some intervention apparently, whether surgery or removal under local anaesthetic.
I guess I'm just feeling a bit discombobulated. When they phoned to recall me, they were adamant that I had to attend this appointment the same week (after I said that it was tricky because I had my own patients scheduled at work). But now... this wait.
Has anyone else been in this situation? Radial scarring vs return of cancer: which does it usually turn out to be?
TIA.
Hi, I haven’t been in your position, but I thought I’d reach out and say ‘hello’ on this Saturday evening. The waiting is awful. Mental torture. I was diagnosed during lockdown and everything was so quick then. But now the waits are longer. Several people have posted about this, and it does appear to be UK wide. Perhaps the wait is due to annual leave, or perhaps your appointment this week couldn’t be delayed because someone would be on holiday next week. Hopefully someone will come on soon with some experience of this. Xx
