Hi all,

I’m starting a week of radiotherapy tomorrow afternoon, just looking for any tips or advice please xx

  • Just finished mine, try and relax when you’re in there, use a good moisturiser and rest if you’re tired.  The travelling every day was the worst thing.  Radiographers were lovely and put you at ease.  It will be done before you know it xx

  • Thank you, the radiographer phoned me earlier and asked me go in early so we can have a chat before hand. I’ve been using bio oil on my scars which has done a nice job, I’ve seen a lot of people say they used Avino moisturiser would that be better than the oil for radio don’t think? X

  • Hi  , my radiotherapy was over 4 years ago now so things may have changed, but I was told to make sure that my skin was free of any moisturisers for at least 2 hours before going. And they recommended moisturisers (like Aveeno) rather than oils during treatment. People have different ‘favourites’ and some clinics even provide it but I think most of us have had to buy our own. Aveeno was my main one, as well as aloe Vera cream which I kept in the fridge so it was nice and cooling. I kept up twice daily moisturising for ages after and still do so after showering. Nowadays I use Palmers cocoa butter oil.
The other tip that someone here suggested was drinking lots! It’s apparently really important to keep hydrated and can help with any fatigue, I believe. Lastly, I made sure I walked every day, even just for half an hour and even in the dark if necessary! It was January so dark early.
Oh and have some treats! I went to the hospital cafe before or after, depending on timing, for a drink. Not coffee though, before treatment, as it made me jittery.
Will be thinking of you tomorrow, it’s good you’re seeing the radiographer earlier for a chat. I found the staff were lovely and tried to make it all as easy as possible. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • I'm 12 weeks out of radiotherapy.  It's not as bad as you may think it's going ro be. Relax and it will soon be done. I agree that Bio Oil is not the way to go during radiotherapy.  I was advised E45 cream and I used it like it was going out of fashion.  Make sure you keep up with your exercises as tightness can occur.  Be kind to yourself and get plenty of rest  it is a little draining.  Good luck, you've got this xxx

  • Aww thank you for your reply and lots of helpful tips, much appreciated! My apt is not till 3.45 so I’m planning on keeping busy like the idea of the cafe visit too Blush

  • Thanks for the advice, I may go shops before my apt and get some decent moisturiser, I won’t use anything tomorrow tho just in case as per happyfeet1’s  advice xx

  • Also don’t take supplements or vitamins that are not prescribed, check with the radiologist, these can interfere with the treatment.  My arms went numb a couple of times and was advised to wear gloves.  I used a aveeno and still do, but not on the day of treatment.

  • Thanks Gardinia, I’m not taking any at the moment but it’s something I was thinking about starting, was going to speak with my breast care nurse for advice first though as I don’t want to interfere with the Letrozole. Do you take any supplements now if u don’t mind me asking?

  • I take Adcal prescribed for bone health and benecol to lower my cholesterol and letrozole.

  • I too used Asda own version of e45 (2 pound instead of 9 pound) and went through nearly a whole large tub. I had tiny bit of cracking so radiography team gave me flamigel. But they complimented me on how well my skin was doing
