Good evening.
initially when diagnosed with HER2 positive invasive breast cancer, I was told 12/12 of Herceptin.
when I saw the oncologist, they now say 6/12.
Has anyone else had this?

Thanks

  • Hi PDarlo

Sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. IYour team may not have had all the information they needed when you were first diagnosed. Once they know the full story it’s not unheard of for your oncologist to change your treatment plan.

    Hope this helps.

Best of luck with your treatment.

  • Hello

I had her2 positive and had 12 months of herceptin but there has been a trial which has showed that 6 months is just as effective as 12 so that's the regime that will be followed I would imagine.  I guess it been passed and proven. I think it was called permissimon trial.

    Hope this helps

  • I too have HER2 positive breast cancer. I initially was told 12 months and then when I saw the oncologist recently he said six months . At the time I thought fantastic and didn't ask why . Later I had a look at NICE guidelines and noticed that they hadn't been altered . I did a bit of googling and read about the Persephone trial 2019 ( I think ). NICE looked at this trial in 2020 and didn't change the guidelines . I spoke to my breast nurse about this , who then discussed with the Oncology Team . I think my treatment plan is now back to 12 months . This is the document  -2020 exceptional surveillance of early and locally advanced breast cancer: diagnosis and management (NICE guideline NG101) My breast nurse is going to let me know if there have been any recent trials looking at 6m v 12m .

  • Thanks  that’s really useful. I had looked at the trial but hadn’t looked at NICE. I’m a healthcare practitioner and normally look at all NICE guidelines for my patients. I really should have looked for myself too.
I think I will also discuss with my BCN, she is amazing.

Thanks again for giving me a bit of a push to question it and not just “do as I am told”

it’s so much easier being the person treating someone, than the person being treated

  •   I was diagnosed in June 2019 Her2 pos  and after MX followed by chemo had Herceptin x 18 . Story is on my profile I can’t recall any other choic3 at that time only being told b6 onco that to get Herceptin NICE insist on chemo prior .

Things change all the time as more and more research done and because we all react differently to our types of cancer . Just make sur3 you ask all your team whatever you need to so you feel comfortable with your treatment

    best wishes

  • Thanks Margaret, yes I do need to take one step at a time, that’s good advice.
I’ve messaged my amazing BCN to see if they can explain. I’m just someone that needs to understand xx

    Much appreciated

  • I'm a retired healthcare professional . At times it has been really difficult for me because I want to discuss things in depth and I think it must come across as if I am challenging decisions . I just need to understand why . There may be some new information that they've heard about at a conference and if so then I would like them to share that information with me . Herceptin can damage the heart so there is a lot to consider . I would be really interested to hear what your BCN says

  • Thanks, Like minds. I just want to understand too.
I will let you know what response I get from my BCN.
