Radiotherapy treatment errors?

Hi Guys,

I wondered if anyone had experienced Radiotherapy set up errors?

I had my third session today. It seems they hadn't positioned me correctly. So i lay there for the usual 10 minutes with the beams on, thought we were finished. Then they came back through and said, we think we haven't positioned it just right so we're going to do it again.

It's appears to me that i've had a double dose here. Which gives me some concerns. Has anyone experienced anything like this? And if so have they had any issues because of it?

I already feel like it all hurts and looks significantly worse then yesterday. I assume they weren't too far off where they wanted to be, so hopefully they haven't zapped any organ they shouldn't have. But it seemed very odd.

  • Oww  - fiddlesticks indeed.  I am sorry to read what has happened and can imagine you are worried and with worry our minds go into overdrive.  I would say if they thought it would of caused any problems they wouldn't of done the second dose (after all if they hadn't said anything - you wouldn't of been any the wiser) thats one thought the other is 'if' the areas 'overlapped' maybe you might experience more reddening of the skin or burning (I don't know this - just my thoughts).

I think for peace of mind and what to do (having it written into notes etc) contact the Macmillan Nurse or a BC Nurse that can be impartial in their response (if this makes sense - so you get an honest answer).

Maybe others on here can provide more help or have experienced similar.

    Please keep us updated xx

I'm hoping this makes sense - only my mind says one thing and my fingers type whatever they like x
  • When I had my radio therapy similar things happened to me and at least 4 times.  I hope I am going to dispel  your fears when I explain.  When I was positioned ready for the zap they disappear to scan the set up during which if there was a problem they took about 10 minutes or more, but when all was ok it only took about 4 or 5 minutes.  When there was a problem they would come back in and say sorry but we need to reposition you.  They always told me that they hadn’t starting zapping at that point.
I honestly think this is what happened to you but they should have reassured you they hadn’t started.  They would never give you a double dose so please don’t worry.
There was one occasion that repositioning happened 3 times and I had to come off the table for them to reposition the head mould.  That session took an hour but I only had the correct amount of radio therapy.  Please do not worry, i feel sure you’ve been overdosed.  Best wishes. M xx

  • Thanks so much for your reply. With it being the weekend the next people i'll be able to access will be the radiotherapy team on Monday. I will ask them to explain if they're running on time.

I am concerned mostly because it's been so painful ever since. I think they pushed me a bit higher up then the CT scan had placed me. So i guess they had no choice but to do it again. But it would have been nice to say, 'Hey, we may have hit your stomach and the half a breast we got is really not going to be happy when we hit it again. So here's what to expect and what to do if you have issues'

I don't get mad about mistakes. But they could have given me information. It's probably a good shout to ask a MacMillan nurse. The breast care nurses are a bit of a nightmare to get hold of and mostly just say 'ask the oncologist'. I don't know about you, but i can never seem to access the oncologist. My last onco appointment turned out to be the nurse practioner who mostly said, 'we'd have to ask the oncologist'. There just seems a lack of communication everywhere - which is exactly why i come here and talk to all you nice people!

  • Can you ask them directly to explain, they obviously didn't tell you enough at the time.  You shouldn't have to worry about it now. For your own peace of mind. X

  • Sorry, my reply to What Happened was meant to be a reply to you.
Its a tough time for you and to have this worry as well must be hard. You need to have a conversation with the radotherapist at you next session.  He or she is the best person to discuss your fears with.
As I’ve already said, I doubt they have overdosed but please get reassurance for your peace of mind.  M xx
