Hi everybody.
I take a daily 50mg ibandronic acid tablet . I have been on these for 4 months now . The side effects are bearable but during a conversation with my doctor whilst having acupuncture to help with sleep problems I mentioned that I struggle with the daily tablet. I have other medications I need to take at various times of the day ( we’ve had to change the timings of these to fit in with the essential morning routine with the ibandronic acid tablet ). I find it seems to rule my life at the moment which I accept I have to do but occasionally I find it really difficult especially if I am going out for the day and have an early start .
My doctor mentioned she could prescribe the weekly tablet . I told her I had requested this from the breast care nurse and would find it so much more acceptable . The breast care nurse just said I need to take the daily tablet but no explanation as to why. Before I go back to the breast care nurse with the request , has anybody else come across this please ? My doctor , whilst I know she is not the cancer specialist , does not understand the reasoning .
It could be my age ( I’m 70 ) and this is the best option within my treatment ( I have had tumour removed, ER and PR positive , HER negative, radiotherapy and I also take Letrozole ) or maybe down to cost ( I cannot see this being the reason but we never know ) .
I have followed all advice given to me and done everything requested of me but I would like to go back with some info regarding the dosages and try again for the weekly tablet. As I say, there could be a really good reason I have to take the daily tablet .
By the way, the acupuncture does seem to be helping . I feel extremely lucky to be offered these few sessions by my doctor . It also gives a few minutes to have a chat with her whilst the needles are doing their magic.
take care and the very best wishes to everybody

Hi, I'm following this thread. I'm in the same situation, I've been on it for 10 months and finding I've got throat irritation, probably from this. So I've been prescribed Lanprizole, which also limits food and drink. So I'm looking at about 2 hours before I can have anything other than water. I do work too. So it is a problem. Why do some have infusion and others daily tablets? X

Hi if this will help or not my Bio is on my profile if you want to read .
Short story is MX in 2019 age 69yr followed by chemo then Herceptin ( HER2 POS ) this was followed by three year of bisphosphonate infusions ..Zoledronic acid one every 6 months 7 in total
Oncologist explained that this was to strengthen bone against recurrence .
Tablets were never discussed with me . I have read about them and must admit I am glad that I had infusions . A 15 min infusion every 6 months with some minor SE lasting 2/3 weeks . For me this was A few aches and pains and flu like feelings also slight down mood . Then all done until next 6 monthly visit
It might be worth asking if you are a suitable candidate for infusions if you prefer the sound of it
I finished in Dec so hopefully no more treatment for me .
best of luck
Hi Margaret,
Same name as my Gran, who passed away when I was 1, 65 yrs ago. What was the sweet potatoe cake like, never heard of it. Quite a journey, 3 yrs of treatment wow. My surgery was early Dec, I'm grade 2 stage 2 and it was in 1 lymph node of 30.
Waiting for Oncotype DX to come back. I'm a Northerner although I left many yrs ago. I have ostopirosis in my wrists, improving with treatment. It'll be an up and down kind of year I can see. Just want to get to the other side if it. X
Hi Betsycar
I am also having intermittent throat issues . I was also prescribed lansoprazole tablets but I don’t take them ) but as you say, they also bring restrictions. I have the same issue with having to take thyroid tablets. They too carry time restricted issues.
I am going to once again ask the breast care nurses about the infusion option . When I asked initially they told me they prefer the tablet route due to the possibility of getting an infection with the infusion process. I asked again but still got the same answer . Maybe third time lucky !
thank you for your reply . I will let you know how I go on.
take care , NannaJ
Thank you for the info. I’m going to ask about the infusions .
take care

Hi, I have been prescribed 70mg alendronic acid weekly tablets for osteoporosis by my GP following the DXA scan, not started them yet. The worst side effect from reading about them is the Osteonecrosis of the jaw. There is less risk of this with the tablet form, not sure how much less. They advised not to have any teeth removed as that can be a cause.
Like Gardina, I was prescribed weekly Alendronic Acid tablets for osteoporosis before I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I took it for about six months but it made me feel awful. I was advised to either have a annual infusion or try Ibandronic Acid tablets which I could take once a month. I opted for the monthly tablet and this has been fine for the last 2.1/2 years. My oncologist said that normally Breast Cancer patients are put on a daily tablet but as I was coping well with the monthly one I could stay on that. I honestly don’t think I could cope taking a biophosphate every day. Hope you can find an alternative.
Hi Sabrina22 sorry system won’t let me tag
I had MX IN JULY 2019 and at meeting with onco in the August was told the length of time I would be having treatment . I thought then I would never get out the other side . .. but here I am three and half years later a month on from last treatment .
So you will get thru it and out the other side it’s strange not to be having treatment .
The sweet potato cake is similar to carrot cake has ginger and spices added it’s very moist and has shelf life of about 7/ 10 days but never lasts that long I bake as a tray bake then quarter and freeze some .As you can see it’s from a magazine a good few years ago and well used
