Hi I had a lumpectomy at the beginning of December & went back to see consultant a week later who told me the cancer had not spread to my lymph nodes . I have noticed that the swelling in my breast has not gone down it feels like a bowling ball.. I just need some radiotherapy treatment which I have to start in second week of January. Can anyone give me advice on how I will feel during treatment, thanks.

  • Oh Tracey, I hope it's not too painful for you x. Mine was at the bottom of the breast - along the bra line.

I was given gauze with the flamazine by my GP surgery nurse, it helps keep the area clean, stops it rubbing & the cream isn't rubbing off either.

For first week I was putting the cream & gauze on two - three times daily, then reduced as the week went on.

  • I’m one week post radiotherapy now.  5 sessions and thought I’d done well avoiding any major issues.  Looks like I need to remain vigilant.  A question, where my lumpectomy was performed, I have a big hard lump just appeared, is that normal??  I’m hoping it’s just the radiation doing it’s thing??  Also any recommendations as to how to avoid sweaty under boob gratefully received x.

  • I had a 5 session radiotherapy and no major problems. i have found that my breast feels heavy and firmer - which I was told to expect. Where my lump was removed there is a hard lump. To ease this and the radiotherapy firming I message my breast and underarm daily. The lump is much softer. I used Aveena cream and then 8 weeks post therapy added in a few drops of Vit E oil. Boob sweat maybe check that your bra is not tight up under your breast.

  • That’s reassuring to know, fingers crossed.  I’m so fair skinned that I was afraid I’d burn badly, so far so good.  I’ve been using aloe Vera and E45 liberally.  Vit E bought and good to go.  Did you start massage straight away?

I’ve been wearing sports bras and those little vests with support in them with a piece of gauze or a tissue to stop the skin on skin.  Maybe I’m just a sweating Betty?   They are rather large though, even the new smaller one!

  • See if it softens with gentle massage. Radiotherapy can cause a variety of things. Mine is tender and flared up after exercise a few days ago. Ask the Nurses on here when it's had a couple of weeks to change. I have a friend whose implants went hard with radiotherapy, she needs then changing. Xx

  • thanks Sabrina22.  I’ll give that a try, gently gently xx. Both lymph node and lumpectomy scars a bit raised today, guess it means radiation working.  Oh the joys of it all xx

  • I started massage as soon as my operation scars had closed. Then had a break for 4 weeks during radiotherapy as I was worried that I might trigger a skin reaction, then started again.

  • Link for massage is excellent.  Here it is

I was told by radiation oncologist no massage to start until : weeks after I completed radiation treatments.  I had 3 weeks of radiation.

My breasts are soft with no lumps and feel great with no pain.  Will be a year in mid May that I have been doing daily  breast massage and was to do for a year.  Almost done.

Take care and hope it helps.

  • No massage for 3 weeks after radiation treatment ended.  I made a typo and left that out.  Need to proofread better.
