4 weeks ago I had a lumpectomy for IDCS and have recovered fairly well from the surgery. The next stage of my treatment is 3 weeks of radiotherapy and tamoxifen for 5 years. I am due to go on a much needed 2 week holiday with my family in a few weeks and my oncologist seems relaxed about me starting radiotherapy when I return from holiday-this will be about 9 weeks post surgery. He has told me I can start taking Tamoxifen before my radiotherapy treatment- has anyone else started taking Tamoxifen before radiotherapy? If so, how did you feel? Many thanks for any advice. I know I shouldn’t question his advice!
Hi Bab,
I have just logged in as about to change from anastrozole to tamoxifen, unfortunately cannot tell you side effects. I started anastrozole before lumpectomy and radiotherapy. Therefore I am assuming you can start before the radiotherapy. I trust my surgeon and am quite sure it is fine.
enjoy your holiday xx
Hello. I had surgery last June, started Tamoxifen in mid July and had my rads late aug/sept. Theres details in my profile. I started taking it in a morning but had a few days of feeling quite nauseous so switched to an evening after dinner which is much better. Everyone is different so it may be a case of playing around with both time of day and the brand as side effects seem to be quite personal. Have a read of this thread which may help:

Thank you so much Tired Minion. Your story is very muck like mine. I hope you are doing well.
I found tamoxifen fine. I don't have any symptoms beyond menopausal ones that I had anyway from the chemo. No joint pains, headaches, nausea or anything like I hear about with AIs. It really has been fine. Also find sage tea helps with my hot flushes/night sweats - I have some nights with only one night sweat and others with loads - though it does seem to relate to whether I had more than one cup of coffee in the day or not. I try to avoid too much caffeine, spicy food, alcohol and sugary foods as they all make the sweats/flushes worse. Enjoy that much needed holiday!
