I had a lumpectomy 2 days ago I have a drain in my right side breast with a sentinel node removal. There is nothing going into drain and this has been like this for 2 days. BCN said it looked normal but I have more numbness in my right bicep top of arm. Pins and needles is this normal.

  • I had a full mastectomy and all I can tell you is I am totally  numb all over the are they operated on and I am 6 weeks post surgery .  If the drain is empty that suggests that they could take it out . Try not to worry and keep talking to your BCN xxx

  • Thank you Harleybear

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this

I will speak to someone if it becomes that bad

  • It is definitely worth getting it checked any time you are worried . That’s what they are there for xxx

  • I had node clearance from armpit three weeks ago and my tricep and armpit are completely numb. Not sure why the back of my arm is affected but guessing numbness is normal xx

  • Sorry to hear this hel39

I've just read it's normal I'm not sure why it's come on suddenly as I didn't notice as much. I think I've overdone it but it's fine I will ring tomorrow if I'm worried.

    Hope you get yours sorted

Hopefully I get my drain our next week

  • I had my right side lumpectomy and nodes clearance on 2nd of March , my underarm is also numb. I took my bandages off and cleaned it with water. I do feel pins and needles sometimes.. but I have noticed if I keep exercising with that arm or just do house work and keep busy that arm then feel no pins and needles.  But biceps hurts if I press them with my other hand.  I guess it will take few week to settle down. My worry is that my mammogram appointment is on 15th and I guess it is bit too soon for that, and it will be so hurtful…

  • Hi oleen

Yes 10 days time I wxpect it will start to fade

    Taking off dressing that's brave

I can't think what it would be like

If it still bad I will ring nurse up and see what they say.

    Thanks for reply

  • Hi, I had lumpectomy and node clearance two weeks ago, very sore tight arm and some lucid retention in elbow area despite drain. The BCN has been brilliant so definitely call them and ask but also please do ask to have it looked at as I felt so much better being seen when drain came out just for that peace of mind.

I’ve been surprised how I had very little pain for two weeks despite 4 inch scar in armpit but now it is stinging and sore, they said that’s normal.

haven’t had pins and needles but know someone who did, we forget that it’s major surgery and will take weeks to recover. You will feel a bit better once drain out as it’s annoying and a reminder plus I found once I had better range of movement in my arm swelling and odd feelings got better.

    lots of hugs…

  • Hi Kate4

Thank you so much for reply. Its reassuring we are all going through the same stuff.

My pins and needles are not to bad now still in pain but it's only been 3 days.

Will go and BCN tomorrow hopefully won't have this in to long.

I've not looked to much but my drain stitch has come away I think. I can't see because of the dressings on both areas.

When did you take dressings away as my area looks like clingfilm then dressing on both wounds.

  • Hi, just to add to the convo - I am 12 days post lumpectomy and node clearance and I still have numbness in my armpit and my upper arm. It’s annoying but not painful - I think it’s because they disturb the nerves a bit so it takes time for them to settle down again.

The worst thing for me as been the itchiness which I’m sure means it’s getting better but it’s been driving me mad! Wearing a nice soft support vest has helped as I think my bra was making it worse.

Wishing you a speedy recovery x
