High blood pressure reading before surgery

Hi everyone,

Quite new here, been lurking for a week or so.

Advice or similar experience please ... I've been for my pre-op today and of course, my blood pressure is up. My surgery is scheduled for this Monday 14th Feb.

I very much get white coat syndrome but I'm also affected by anxiety anyway and have been for a few years, it is of course now heightened since my breast cancer diagnosis 2 weeks ago.

The nurse took 4 readings and it gradually came down but not enough for her to be happy. I know if I'm monitored while I'm sleeping, it's normal.

So now she has given me a letter to give to my GP with the readings and asking them to sort out my blood pressure to enable me to have surgery. All she said to me as I think you need some help to get you through this period, I only saw the letter contents because I opened it when I got home.

This gives my GP 3 days to sort this when trying to get a GP appointment is almost impossible anyway! As if diagnosis isn't bad enough to cause anxiety and now this when I just want to get it over and done with.

I'm so worried my surgery will be cancelled last minute. I honestly do not believe I have proper high blood pressure. The hospital want a call from the GP or myself to confirm the outcome.

I just feel rubbish. Help? Advice? Had the same?

Thank you, hope everyone is doing okay and thanks for listening

  • I was in the exact same position as you. Prior to pandemic, I annually either had a 24 hour monitor or given a blood pressure monitor and took my pressure 3 times daily for a week. I also could not get seen by GP so my case went to hospital MDT team as it was 2 years since I'd been monitored.

Found out on the Monday that Wednesday surgery was going ahead. The hospital were amazing as I had 4 anaethatists monitoring me. I was put under very slowly once I was on the table.

Hopefully you have as good an experience as I did.

  • Gilly glad you’re home, it sounds as though your hospital experience was eventful. You say you’re changed forever and I can understand that but turn it on its head and, once you’re feeling better, get tackling that bucket list

  • Hi,

Thank you for your post. I wish you a speedy recovery, and fingers crossed for your margins. I have surgery scheduled for 22nd and had similar anxious time after seeing nurse at pre op assessment last week. I spoke with my GP a who was great. I have been through this before with the other breast 8 years ago, but really feeling much more anxious this time.

    Are you in the South?

My blood pressure went sky high before surgery and even higher in the day. I asked the nurse and she said not worry, they expected anxiety to send blood pressure up. It stayed high for a week or so after then gradually came back down and I normal. I also suffer from anxiety. My doctor gave me short term anxiety meds to help me get through the diagnosis part of the journey. Good luck xxxx

  • Hi Karen22 no I’m in the Midlands. I’ve come to the conclusion that as we get older the anxiety seems worse. I certainly used to pick myself up and bounce back better from life setbacks previously. I think it’s the accumulation factor for me, don’t know about others? But you do get tired and worn down from overcoming and being strong. My life has been way more eventful than I would’ve chosen and certainly my siblings have had more settled lives.
At 58 the menopause factor doesn’t help either. I’m not one usually to feel sorry for myself but I kind of do at the moment, it’s a sadness. I may use the Macmillan counselling service at some point as I feel loved ones can only give so much support plus they are dealing with their own emotions. Happy to private chat/message anyone who feels a connection and hope to connect in person with some local to me.
Ive got some visitors coming today - hurrah! My daughter, 6 month old grandson and his other Nanny.
    Happy hump day everyone xx
