Having an mastectomy on my left breast in two weeks I’m totally scared. Any tips or advice from those who have had this procedure would be helpful. Thank you
Hi I didn't have a mastectomy but I have two friends who did and the recovery didn't seem difficult. You should get given pain meds and so you shouldn't be in pain. When going into hospital take front fastening bras and tops and easy to pull on trousers to make it easier for you to get dressed. Then wear similar clothes at home too while you recover.
A pillow to put under your arm for the car journey home is also useful.
If you put mastectomy into the search box you should be able to see other peoples posts and might find some more useful tips.
All the best with your surgery
Hiya, l had a total mastectomy back in 2005, with reconstruction because l couldn't bear to not see anything there. This was my choice and it saved my life and my dignity. I won't say don't be scared because l was terrified, but looking back it was the best decision because l am here to tell my story and help you. A good bra will make you almost normal if you go for the reconstruction and now, nothing phases me, l am a survivor and l make the most if every day if Covid allows. Good luck Nimsay x
After your mastectomy did you have other treatment?
Hi, I had right mastectomy and axillary clearance 8 week ago withour immediate reconstruction. I would have loved reconstruction straight away but the type I needed needs to be done in a hospital 2 hours from home so I made the decision to have it done in the future.
The recovery from mastectony was quite straight forward. I was home the same day as op with a drain and a heart shaped pillow (this type of pillow is amazing and I would recommend to anyone having mastectony) the drain came out after a week. They give you exercise to do, make sure you do them as these are important and help so much. I didn't feel the pain from op was that bad and I hardly needed to take any pain relief. In fact I had a tooth infection a couple of weeks later and the pain was so much worse. Fast forward 8 weeks and I have recovered fully, move my arm like I did before etc. When I have my protheseis on you cannot tell any difference and it feels so comfortable.
All the best to you x
You are guessing right. Even with all the information you must have gathered, you still have to get through it yourself to find out what it is really like for you. Now that I know the date you are going in, I will be thinking of you on the day and I hope things go as smoothly for as they did for me when I had my mastectomy back in November.
