This is the latest, now in need  a radioactive test on my heart to see if I'm up to chemotherapy . I have had biopsies mammogram bilateral mastectomy total node clearance ( which took 7 hours ) .  I have Seromas both sides cording both  arms . Had an Oncotype test came back 38. The heart test will go ahead , if I have a covid test that's negative . I don't believe I have any problems with my heart I'm not on my medication or have any conditions apart from the cancer which they say has gone.  I am just so down at the moment this is never ending . Trying to keep strong and get a wig . Sometimes this is all to much . Anyone else had this heart test? And what they going to do if I did have a problem? Will my chemotherapy plan change I'm exhausted with all this .

Thanks for listening Jayne X

  • Hi Rhiwbina

I had a heart test just before I started my treatments and it turned out fine.

Wishing you the best of luck with the test and your treatment once you start it.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Jayne, Some types of chemo can effect your heart more than others and I had to go for an Echo heart test prior to my chemo starting to make sure that there were not any irregularities. Sometimes people have heart conditions without knowing so it's just a precautionary check. I was told that if a problem was found it didn't necessarily mean that I would receive no chemo, it might have meant a lower dosage, a different type of chemo or just more regular heart checks, depending on what the issue was. My test result was clear and the whole process was  quick and painless and the results came through quite quickly. Like you I felt that the tests seemed never ending but try to think of them as helping to identify/minimise any issues you might have when receiving treatment & chemo. Better for the medical team to know in advance than find out later.  Good luck with the chemo. I'm over half way through now, and have had 4 cycles, and it hasn't been too bad overall x

  • I had a heart scan before chemo as well as the chemo I was going to have (EC-T) can affect your heart and they need to make sure it is healthy enough to go ahead. It was pretty straightforward. I was fit and healthy before cancer diagnosis and ran regularly (and am back to that now) so it really is routine, no matter who you are.

  • Hi Jayne, it's non-stop isn't it? If you are having EC chemo they do a hearty scan first as it can affect it.   If you are HER2+ then you'll also be given drugs which can affect your heart. Good luck,  and fingers crossed it all goes well x

    Hi Jayne,

I´m so sorry you´re feeling down with it all, it´s so understandable as I too feel overwhelmed with the tests I´ve already had and the ones to come too.

It´s tough but the way I´m trying to think of it is that they´re giving me all of these tests to make sure my body is ready (as it ever will be!) for chemo.

We can do this! You´re not alone, we´re here. Sending you love. XX

Thankyou  Doria I do hope I can do this

Thank you for helping to cheer me up!

  • Hi there - I know how you feel. I had a scan too and felt reassured that my heart was fit for the treatment to go ahead as planned. Just approaching 2nd round of chemo of 6 and just try to take each day as it comes, just saying to myself that this disease is only claiming 1 year of my life and not the rest of it x
