Chemo yes or no

I have had a mastectomy 6 weeks ago and expected to have chemotherapy however they say they think I won’t benefit enough from it and after seeing my oncologist they say it’s my choice. How on earth can I choose? My cancer is grade 1 13mm invasive ductal carcinoma ER + with 1/23 nodes affected. I also have LVI (lymph vessel invasion). I asked the oncologist what she would do if she was me re the chemo choice and she said she wouldn’t have it. She said the benefit doesn’t outway the risks associated with chemo.
I really don’t know what to do. I want to give myself the best chance but feel it unfair that I have to choose.
anyone else been through this decision ?

  • Hi. I was told that they thought I wouldn’t gain because of the type /grade of cancer it is and it’s successfully kept at bay by the hormone tablets. The damage to my body with the chemo could cause more problems than solve. When they get a score from predict system I was told a 4% gain from chemo you had no choice but to have it (obviously you can refuse) I was 1.2% that’s why they think surgery and hormone therapy should be enough. Anyway I’m seeing a consultant next week for a second opinion. I’ll let you know. Glad you came through it ok x

Hi, i am in a similar position, i have been told only 1.6% gain from having chemo,  so my oncologist is not recommending it for me.    i have had a mastectomy and the recommendation now is just radiotherapy and tamoxifen.  i would be interested to hear what your second opinion brings and hope it makes your decision easier.  x

  • Hi. I saw the different consultant and he was of the same mind as the other I saw and i would not benefit from chemo compared to the damage that could be done. Well I’m having the Oncotype DX test which gives a reoccurrence score. I’m having to pay for it and it is expensive but together with the oncologist we have decided if it comes back low 0-25 I won’t have chemo. If medium or high I will. Let me know how you get on it’s a really difficult decision and I struggled to make it so spending on the test I felt would direct me in making one xx

  • Hi gwills,

did they say anything about the lymph vessel invasion? I read this on the pathology report and it’s freaking me out. They never mentioned this to me at the appointments

  • Yes. I asked about it as I was told about it as I was concerned about spread via LVI. However they weren’t too concerned and explained it was around the tumour and the fact it was in only one lymph out of 23 and my CT was clear.
I suggest u ask and I’m sure they would have said something if they were concerned and your treatment plan would be tailored to include this fact if seamed necessary.
