Hello, I am new to the community. My mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer and started treatment with chemo through pills (I am not sure which). One of the side effects that bother her the most is having excessive buildup of phlegm in her throat. She does not feel able to consult about this with her physician and it will be a while until she will have her next review (she does not live in the UK, the health system works differently there than it does here). I was wondering if anyone had any tips of things that might help ease the buildup of phlegm or help manage it? I hope it is OK to ask here. She would be grateful for some advice on this. I know it is very specific and only a small thing, but I hope I can help her with this, because sometimes it is the little things that make all the difference.
I am, of course, in daily contact with her to give her emotional support (cannot do much more from far away), and this is the first time she identified something that could help improve her general feeling, hence why I ask.
I am grateful for this community and thankful for any tips you can share.
Hi
I'm sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer and that she's struggling with phlegm. I don't have any experience with this but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. This is possibly because this is such an active group that your post has slipped off the first page before someone with the right experience has seen it. Replying to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where it'll have more chance of being seen.
I had a look through some of the previous posts and noticed that WhatHappened posted about having phlegm a few years ago so I've tagged them into my reply in case they can help you further.
I know that you've said that your mum doesn't feel able to talk to her doctor about this but they are really the best person to talk to as they have access to all your mum's notes and can see if it's the chemotherapy that's causing this.
It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment in your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Hello and latchbrook,
I had forgotten I had posted this, therefore, I believe mine was related to the cold that I had at the time.
I am sorry your mom is going through this, your mom is so blessed you are looking out for her. I can tell you anyone looking into treatment, side effects, etc and talking about them really does mean such a lot. I didn't have this kind of support - I had to do my work myself and it can get you down..... so to hear of suggestions of that can be tried etc I think will mean the world to your dear mom.
I think question might be better answered either by one of the ladies that have had chemo or possible ask in the monthly chemo thread - as it could possibly be chemo side effect.
Hopefully below will be a link to the monthly chemo thread.....
Wishing your mom all the best and of course if you have any concerns or worries you have found the right place, there is so much knowledge and support here - just ask away....
Love and Hugs,
Gail W
