Lumpectomy and auxiliary node clearance

I had my surgery yesterday and unfortunately all 3 of the nodes examined had cancer cells in them, so a complete clearance was performed.  I am pleasantly surprised how well I feel today and with little discomfort except for my throat which is rather sore.  I do not know what is next but will find out on 6th July.  I am hoping that things will continue to go smoothly.  I was very concerned about how long the operation would take and it was long because of the clearance (went to theatre at 12.15 and back to the ward at 4.30.  Allowed home with a drain at  9.30 pm.) I hope that the pain will not start as everyone had told me that the clearance part is the worst.  I also do not feel tired but maybe that comes later too?  I don't know.  I would like to express my appreciation to the people on this forum for their help and support.  I have appreciated it very much.  My surgeon is an advocate of positive thought and I think he may have something there. If there is anyone about to have similar treatment I have not found it too painful and difficult I hope you will have a similar experience.  I am glad that the cancer is out.

  • Hello and glad you are home! I had mastectomy and 3 nodes sampled but 2 had cancer in them so I had the clearance done as separate procedure four weeks after mastectomy and implant reconstruction. The armpit clearance definitely more trying in its after effects but I’m doing ok. Fluid buildup has been drained twice and my lesson from that . Don’t be a martyr if it happens to you. I find out tomorrow what my other 17 nodes contained and am dreading it. Xx

Sorry to hear all three nodes had cancer. One of my three did so had to have the rest removed during another operation. I got my results Thursday and the rest of my nodes were all clear. I did have more discomfort after the full clearance and swelled up like a small ball. Had it drained once then it drained itself. I’m just waiting for my radiotherapy to start now, hopefully in few weeks.

Best of luck for your results. I know the waiting is hard but keep yourself busy. I found reading helpful and going for short walks when I was able to. I managed to keep doing my arm exercises.

    Take care xx

Best of luck for your results tomorrow. I found out mine were all clear last week xx

  • Thirds great to read that you are coping well even though you've already experienced alot. I think its so valuable to be thankful when the procedures go well. Hoping your recovery continues without any complications.

Sending huge hugs to all those waiting on results. We are all stand g with you xx

  • Hi Thirds

I’m glad to hear that your operation went well and you were able to go home instead of having to stay in hospital overnight.

Wishing you the best of luck with your results on the 6th of July.

  • Hi Thirds. Pleased you are feeling well. I was the same as you. I was wide awake for 2 days following my overnight stay. I had a mastectomy and full node clearance and recon at the same time. Just keep up the arm exercises. My op was about 1.30 to 5pm so that seems to be the norm. Good luck with your next stage and keep us posted x

  • Hi Thirds

Very best of luck for results on 6th July x Positivity has made a huge difference to me I think. My node clearance op was straightforward too and I had no pain or tiredness afterwards (kept expecting it to happen as everybody told me it would) Do the exercises, stay positive and be very kind to yourself Slight smile

  • Sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. I didn't even know what lymph nodes were prior to the BC world. I had 14 removed and 8 had cancer in them. I dont think it matters too much to be honest as to whether you have 1 or 3+ it seems the standard treatment is the same borderline for chemo then rads etc. You have just reminded me about fluid build up and drainage. It's amazing what you forget and the drains! Good luck for tomorrow. Keep us posted xx
