Hi ive just started Tamoxifen about a week ago and im worried about the side effects putting on weight as I struggle with my weight as it is and need to constantly exercise to keep in shape. Im feeling lack of motivation right now as it is. Has anyone suffered weight gain with these pills and has it been a lot. Thanks in advance for your replies

  • Hello, hello be been on tamoxifen for 5 weeks. My initial side effects were flu like symptoms, but everything has settled down now apart from a few hot flushes. I haven’t noticed any weight gain but I’m trying really hard to keep active 10000 steps a day whilst I’m completing radiotherapy. There are lots of different brands of tamoxifen, so if one doesn’t suit you can perhaps try a different brand. Good luck x

  • Hi, I've been on Tamoxifen since January. Like you I am totally demotivated. I don't want to do anything and feel permanently exhausted. I haven't really put on additional weight. I have made changes to my diet however in particular to reduce the amount of sugar as I have been diagnosed with breast cancer twice now since 2017. I'm trying to follow a diet that is beneficial to fighting breast cancer. I have actually lost about half a stone. It depends how active you are really. I have two dogs and need to walk them every day. I wouldn't go through the door otherwise or get any exercise.

    Hi Tracy

I would not worry about weigh gain, it is a possible side effect, but only possible.

I was on tamoxifen for 14 yrs and had no side effects. Keep doing What you are doing and I am sure you will be fine.

    All the best

That is very reassuring ladies. I haven’t started yet but I am worried about weight gain too.

  • I’m due to start soon too, terrified of the side effects and weight gain also. I had just got to my goal weight then BC happened.

    Hi

I started tamoxifen in January and have put in half a stone so far- in fairness I’m eating rubbish and not exercising as I’m just so tired all the time. After a long day at work I have no desire or energy to think about the gym! Disappointed It’s really getting me down which then makes me feel guilty as I know I’ve been through a lot and so should be thankful!
in the past I’d eat ‘good’ for a week or so and see a change, at the moment I try and see no movement on the scales so then feel demotivated and give up !!

  • @sf79 before I found I out, I was on my journey to being fit healthy and started joe wicks 90 plan, I finished it and by doing this I lost weight and that’s how I found out my BC. I’m dreading the feeling tired because I’m dying to get back to exercise, but  It gave me a totally different look on how to be healthy or eat right or feeling right! We don’t weigh ourselves, it’s called the sad step! So don’t step on them scales, it can really get you down! We all have our days of eating rubbish (I’m doing this right now) ha but tomorrow I know I’ll be good. I’ll go for a long walk (waiting to lift them weights or go for run) but can only walk for now, the fresh air really helps! Try to find time do to something, in your mind you maybe tired or giving yourself an excuse but do it, then do it again the next day! We are all here for support and help, try not feel demotivated! Don’t give up! Think positive, be positive! You can do this x

Ah thank you for that. Another side effect im experiencing is absolute hunger all the time and im getting hunger pains 5 mins after I eat which is making me miserable. I was going to ask about stopping the pills as I cant stand the constant hunger pangs. Thanks for that, thats interesting to know x

AJH4 so sorry to hear that. I generally exercise every day and try to eat healthy but after being on this drug for 2/3 weeks now im experiencing extreme hunger pangs even 5 minutes after I eat, its awful. I also have 2 dogs but sometimes I need my son to walk them as im too tired. I wanted to stop taking the tablets as the constant hunger pains are making me miserable but im hoping this will pass x

Thanks so much for all the replies ladies. I also lifted weights and exercised every day until I was due to go in for my op now im just tired if I do too much. Im still trying to eat healthy and I lost 2 stone just before I got diagnosed. I can feel some weight gain but ive been inactive since just before my op until now where I've started to exercise a little again and ive signed up to do walk 100 miles in May for breast cancer and raise money for the cause. Hoping I see a difference walking every day but is anyone else experiencing the extreme hunger pangs too? Thank you ladies you are all amazing. We can do this Muscle
