Hello everyone,

I'm Steph from the Community team, I hope you don't mind me posting here.

We've been asked to create a new thread for chemo discussions this April, as the existing threads were getting a little long.

  • If you're looking for earlier discussions, you can find them in the Feb/Mar thread here.

  • You can find the chemo aids shopping list thread, created by members of the Community here.

Please do let us know if you have any other threads you think would be useful to link here.

Hi lovely ladies, i was just wondering if any of you have experienced this?
my hair started falling out 4-5 weeks ago so my partner shaved it off. I’m now desperate to be completely bald. Is this strange? I have excepted I’m going to have no hair and now I just want it all gone! I have these random tufts and I find with our ever changing weather I’m struggling when I’m out in the elements because when wearing a turban, I get hot and itchy but if wear nothing on my head the sensation of the wind on my scalp is not pleasant. It’s not painful it’s just really cold. I can’t wait to be completely bald! I wear nothing on my head when I’m indoors and love the freedom of it.

    Hi Janine,

I’m totally with you! My hair has come out quite quickly I think and I’m now almost totally bald. Almost all of the top has come out sort from annoying spiky bits that get caught on anything I put on my head and it’s actually quite sore. I still have patches of hair around the sides and I feel like I look like a half bald man! I’d really like to have a nice smooth bald head!

I did go out with my wig on the other day but it really irritated my scalp. I’ve ordered some wig caps now.

Im finding if I soak my head in the bath or shower and rub my scalp gently a lot of the hairs come out.

it’s definitely really cold without a hat! It’s been snowing here so I stood out to feel the snowflakes on my head - not something I thought I’d ever do - chilly!!

Hoping to get rid of the last tufts soon, hope yours gets there too.

    Ruby xx

Same I still have sparse hairs on my head, I’m not completely bald. I find I need something on my head when it’s cold or when fans on & I’m sleeping then I’m hot flashing and taking it all off then cold again.  I was thinking of razor shaving it. But idk if I’ll get ingrown hairs so I haven’t tried it.  I usually wear a wig when I’m outside or in town. I got a bamboo wig cap and I like it. I’m worried about summer and how hot it’ll be with all that on my head.  I don’t like being hot.

Hi Ruby, I did the same yesterday! It wasn’t snowing but was raining and I had to take our Rumer out for a walk and the rain on my head was so refreshing and I didn’t have to spend any time drying my hair afterwards! I just rubbed a towel over it and it was dry! I’ve tried soaking my head but those remaining hairs are quite stubborn. My partner says it’s definitely falling out but he can see it better than I can!

Hi Ista, I’ve found so far with a turban on my head, I get really hot and sweaty but if I’m mid doggy walks then I end up stripping off then when I get home I huddle under a blanket to get warm again. I really do think my head has a different thermostat to the rest of my body! I’ve also thought about just having my razor shaved but the risk of cuts and getting infected outweigh the benefits I think!

  • So sorry to hear this Gwennie.

As others have said, tell your team. It sounds like you are having a much harder time than you should and they will want to do whatever they can to make it a bit more bearable.

    Hang in there x x x

  • Thanks Bluebell. Good to hear ok so far, long may that continue for you and for . I’m going to file this all away in the “let’s think about that in May” file for now Grinning

  • Hi just jumping in re scalp discomfort my chemo finished 2019 I was bald going into first lockdown needed haircut by the July when I came out .

I was on EC x6 ( story on profile ) but hair hung around far longer than expected . I kept it as short as poss with cuts then shaved on no 2 when pain ifrom follicles were too uncomfortable.

No 2 meant no stubble and less risk of nicks and cuts . Aqueous cream from boots and elsewhere is really good and keeping scalp moisturised ( still use it now and again ) and less itchy . Use prior to shampoo then after small amount rubbed in to scalp .

I found bamboo beanies brilliant at keeping scalp at  correct temperature without causing itch when out and about  ( only wore wig about three times ) also used bamboo sleep cap .

You can get plain coloured beanies then use headband etc to add more colour and shape .

Thankfully the discomfort stage doesn't last long then you can just enjoy the freedom Joy

For info Hair came back in shape of the final no 2 shave my hairdresser did mine .

It also came back with chemo curls and for me it grew really quickly needed trim every four weeks until this lockdown .

best wishes for rest of treatment it is doable I got off the three weekly cycle ichemo then Herceptin Jan 21 now only infusions twice a year til Next year ...

    take care

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

Hi Margaret, thank you for the advice. My hair was shaved at grade 2 and don’t really have enough hair to have another shave, it’s just those few stubborn bits that are irritating me.  I am a bit worried about the summer months as I’m already struggling with regulating my head temperature when I’m outside. I’ll look into the beanies. I’ve already decided not to bother with a wig.
