Hi, I had a single mastectomy in February 2021 and am currently healing. I’m beginning to think about reconstruction. I’ve found the whole process so far very painful and the thought of any more invasive surgery where skin/tissue is removed, replaced etc, frightens me so much and I don’t think I can face it. With that in mind the implant route suits me more. My concern is it will not match my remaining breast. It couldn’t possibly, the one I have has a natural fall, the one they will give me will be more “upright”. Has anybody been successful in having an implant placed in the healthy breast at the same time to create a matching pair! I am yet to have this discussion with my surgeon so just trying to find out beforehand if something like this is even offered in the reconstruction world.
Thanks in advance for any replies x
Hi Rakehill welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about what has been happening for you. I can completely understand why the thought of any more surgery at this point in time is scarey its early days for you in the recovery process.
i dont know enough about your question to answer with any useful information for you but I feel sure that one of the lovely folks on here will pop along soon and be able to offer more information for you re the pros and cons.
Sending some hugs your way meantime. xxx
Hi Rakehill
I am not aware of this being offered to anyone? Having a reconstruction implant is not the same as plastic surgery breast augmentation, so the two breasts would still not look the same? I had an immediate implant reconstruction when I had my mastectomy ( replaced by a Diep flap a couple of years later) and could have had a lift to my good breast, to make it more perky I suppose, but I haven’t bothered. Just my experience, and someone else may say they were offered it.
Good luck with your consultation, I had real problems deciding what to do myself at the time.

Hi jo, thankyou so much for your reply, I opted for the delayed reconstruction as I really didn’t know what option was best and it seemed such a big decision to make, I was still reeling from the cancer diagnosis so my focus was getting the cancer out and everything else can be dealt with later. Could I ask why you had a replacement from implant to diep flap? Anything I can do to avoid surgery after surgery is my goal so really want to get it right first time. Every image I look at is just scar after scar, long healing process, and I don’t think I could cope with another seroma, I’ve found that the most difficult part of the mastectomy healing as it’s been very painful despite being drained twice it just keeps coming back! I think I’m kidding myself that things will ever look the same and I am realistic about that, but I would like to make a decision that gives me the best opportunity of my breasts looking as normal as possible but don’t know if that’s worth a trade off of a big scar across my abdomen. Would love to hear yours or anyone’s feelings on the options and also the results (good or bad) just to help with my decision xx
