Hi,

I recently had a lumpectomy (30mm, ER POS, HER2 NEG, Grade 3). I had a Sentinel Node thing done at the same time which came back as having cancer in it. I'm starting Chemo soon and following with radiotherapy to my breast and nodes. I have no problems with the treatment they are suggesting but they haven't even mentioned checking other nodes or checking to see if it's spread? I do have an appointment with oncology this week to sign my life away and go over stuff again, so I will ask her - but I just wondered if anyone had any insights? Jen x

The chemo and radiotherapy will deal with anything which may have spread beyond the sentinel node, was this removed or just biopsied when you had your lumpectomy?  If they felt that it had spread further than your sentinel node they would have suggested removing more nodes.  Your oncologist will be able to set your mind at rest.

  • If it's only a small amount in one or two nodes then they let thre chemo and radiotherapy deal with it.  If there's more some hospitals do clearance straight away whilst others wait until after thr chemo because they feel it will give a good indicator that the chemo is working well.  Have you had any scans since the positive node? I had 2 CT scans, a nuclear bone scan and an mri done to check for spread elsewhere (all ok!)

Hi, thanks for your reply! It was removed during surgery. I guess I just wanted to know, how they knew the rest were ok - or is it a game of odds that the rest will be taken buzzed during chemo and rads so we don't worry about them. Maybe I'm overthinking (I know!) I do like a good worry lol x

I've not had any scans. I guess that's what's ultimately playing on my mind - like do all the nodes need to be cancerous before it can move or is the one sentinel node enough? I think it's finally got home about the diagnosis with chemo starting and I'm really starting to focus on what's what. Before this I was chilled I was just going along with it all. I will def ask onco on Thurs, I just wanted a we worry I think. Thanks xx
