Hi,
Been given a box of Dexamethasone to take day before, on and after TC chemo which I'm starting in a few weeks.
Looking at side effects they seem to affect mood a lot. How bad is this? Apart from dealing with my own stuff, single parent and home schooling and working from home, my dad was told last week that her has terminal cancer with not a very good time frame. Concerned with everything I have going on, this mood change will have a massive impact.
And to top it off I have been told I can't have cold cap because of Covid. Know in the grand scheme of things losing my hair is not a priority but last chemo 9 years ago the cold cap saved it and was hoping for one less thing to worry about.
Thanks
Del
Hi Del, sorry to hear about your dad, sending you strength and hugs!
From my experience of having dexamethasone throughout my 9 cycles of ECT chemo, I can’t say I noticed a change in my mood (though it’s tricky to know what’s causing what isn’t it?!)
I became obsessed with reading about side effects of every new med I had to take, and part of me thinks I psychologically brought the side effects on myself, if that makes sense! So, easier said than done, but try not to think about or anticipate the side effects, and before you know it you’ll have stopped taking the meds.
It’s rubbish that you don’t have the option to cold cap (wretched covid!) but try and think to yourself- less time in the hospital, and although I didn’t like losing my hair, shaving it off was strangely satisfying as I had taken control and it certainly alleviated my anxiety over it falling out! 5 months later I’ve got a head of dark curls and am looking forward to booking a hairdresser to give me a new pixie style ready for summer. That’ll be you before you know it.
hoping this has helped, even if just a little.
sending another hug xxx
hi Del i have dexamethasone with my cycles of EC currently heading towards the third one, i found that i can get a little irratable and they also make me feel a bit weepy also, and spaced out sometimes, although this does righten itself once i have finished the course and over the rest of the days. i think see how you go, not everybody has the same side effects to be honest, i can manage mine, but obviousley you have a lot going on, have a chat to your onco, or chemo nurse, hope things go ok for you xxx
Hi
I go with what Joanofarc said. I had these and it was usually one day two days after the last dose that I got the downer.
I would be snappy, more ready to burst into tears etc and I would be like that for about 24 to 48 hours.
it wasn’t anything major and after the first couple of cycles I knew when to expect it so I warned my husband not to wind me up on that day or two!
it soon passes and if you are ready for it you can also say to yourself, it’s the meds and don’t rise to it...deep breath!
good luck and stay strong!
