Results being discussed at MDT meeting, does that mean it’s cancer?

Hi, I posted a little while ago about finding a lump, they could not find anything on imaging, ultrasound x2 and mammogram, I’m 38 so they said that’s possibly why with the mammogram, I had a FNA where the cells came back suspicious, so they followed up with a core biopsy and a contrast MRI, both of these tests I’m waiting on results for which I have been told will be discussed at tomorrow’s MDT meeting, I was a little silly and googled what an MDT meeting is and it all comes back to cancer or the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, is this true? Or do they just discuss all results at these meetings? It’s been almost 4 weeks of tests and 6 or more weeks since I went to the GP, so I am going out of my mind a little bit x

  • Hi BeckJane welcome to the forum and I am so sorry to hear about how worried that you are.

As far as I am aware all results are discussed at MDT'S after all if you think about it you had  Mammogram, a biopsy and an MRI etc so all those people will be involved in the MDT and hear the results.

The time waiting around is awful and nothing seems to make it go any quicker but it sounds like they are being very thorough with you so that's good news. Do you have an appointment to get the results or how are they going to let you know the outcome of these?

Hi Gail, thank you for your reply, I was hoping that would be the case and now you put it like that it makes perfect sense x

they really are being fantastic and very thorough with me, I’m overwhelmed with all the tests and how quick they are being, but also this makes me very anxious that they highly suspect breast cancer, I am a little bit useless at asking questions and always come away wishing I had asked this, that and the other ha ha

I spoke to the breast care nurse and she said they would call me after the meeting to arrange an appointment to discuss my results.. I am worried of it is cancer, but on the other ha d I just need to know what I am dealing with, good or bad news if that makes sense x

    Hi Becky,

The waiting and uncertainty is very difficult but at least now you’ve had several tests to be analysed. After my initial appointment when, I discovered I had breast cancer, I always took a notebook with some questions I wanted to ask. It was also helpful to note down what the consultant and BCN told me during the appointment.

I hope you get your appointment soon, take care x

    1. Understand what you mean just been through the waiting stage its utterly exhausting. Unfortunately for me it turned out to be cancer. However the truth often isnt as bad as the fear. All the tests they do now are nerve wracking. When i had it first time round 15 years ago didnt seem to be as many.  Cant really offer any advice but really hoping you are clear. For me they more a less told me it as cancer even before they got the biopsy back . But i kept hoping there was that 5% chance they had got it wrong. I was round your age when i was diagnosed the first time round if it is it i wont deny it is really difficult but you do get through it take care

Hi there. If you click on my name you will see my mums situation so far. Today she contacted the breast clinic and the receptionist said the same thing... they're still waiting on all the results the come back, a letter is due to be typed up and they're discussing mums case in the Thursday morning mdt. Aren't they supposed to tell my mum the results first and how good is a mdt without patient input?

I've just read the other replies also and these make total sense. It may just be timing issue why they're discussing it in the mdt. My mum is 50, her mammograms and ultrasounds both came back clear. She had core biopsy last Wednesday, no MRI or anything as yet, I'm assuming they're waiting on the biopsy results to discuss them. And obviously she might be ok and it may not be Cancer. I've said this a few times but I'm only a relative  the amount of bravery I've read through this forum renders me speechless... such a brave bunch x

    Hi Becky,

I'm sorry to hear you find yourself in this position. When I had my biopsy the Monday before last they told me that all cases are discussed at MDT. They were reassuring me as with cervical cancer (which I have), you are only discussed at oncology MDT if you have cancer. So they were letting me know not to be worried or assume cancer if anyone tells me about it going to MDT.

I hope that is reassuring for you to hear. It certainly was for me.  Good luck for your results. My consultant appointment is next Wednesday.
