Hi all,

I am new to the group and joined because I was curious to know how others coped with exercise following surgery.

My surgery was Wide Local Excision with Axillary Node Clearance.

I am keen on my fitness and have a home gym, run 3 times a week, love my pilates and also teach dance!

I am 1 week post op and keen to get moving. I am struggling a little with being in isolation within my home and having the drain to contend with too. I would LOVE to go for a run!

I understand the importance of listening to my body and have always done so as I believe it tells us a lot if only we take the time to hear what it is saying.

Anyway, my question is, I want something to work towards, I am taking this one day at a time, yet I feel I would like a goal. I have been reading all the physio and exercise leaflets, watched the NHS video and they all talk about getting back to swimming, walking, gym etc yet say nothing about running/jogging.

Have any of you returned to running/jogging? How has that been? When did you return? Any advise?

I have my 1 week appointment with the breast care nurses tomorrow and will ask them too.

  • Hello

I'm keen on exercising too. I walked everyday after my breast surgery and auxiliary clearance. I was told not to jog till my post OP check but walking was fine. I had surgery in june and have recentlyGrinning started to build up jogging. I've put weight on which I blamed on lockdown but its actually because I'm a pig Grinning I will start my other exercises now as well.

    good luck

    Awww thank you Julie.

Thats great to hear! Well done to you too  Raised hands

I have been eating a bit more, as I'm quite bored! Face palm tone1

I actually enjoy doing the post op exercises three times a day and have added in walking up and down the small flight of stairs to the attic room (only 6 steps) just to keep my legs moving!

  • Hiya

Yes I love exercise and was involved in a keep fit group twice a week, sort of army style boot camp stuff. I was going back to that but now lockdown again. I went swimming 4 mornings a week before work as well but not recommended at the moment. Well done you!!!!

What type of BC did you have? Mine was her2 positive

I like the post OP exercises too. Very important after node clearance. Xx

It was a small lump which they initially thought was just a cyst, 14mm, grade 1, ER8, PR8 and HER2 test was unsatisfactory (but came back as negative) so they are redoing that test post op. I won't know the result until a week Tuesday for that.

Did you have to have Chemotherapy as well as radiotherapy?

  • Hi

Yes I had chemo and radiotherapy. I had lumpectomy and double reduction. The lump was 18mm in my left breast. I had chemo first and at surgery the cancer had gone.

Thats amazing to hear Slight smile

  • Hi

I didn't have the same treatments as you (see profile for cancer gubbins) but was back on my bike 6 weeks after ANC (taking it very gently!) and then back at gym (including running/walking intervals) after 10 weeks and felt fine.  I do have to take it easy still with weight lifting/press ups/planks etc. as am generally tempted to do too much.

Might be a good idea to gently get back into it to do the couch to 5k?  Whilst I couldn't do too much I found online LTB classes really useful.

Lucky you having a home gym, I've just invested in some weights & fit ball - that's my home gym sorted!!

Enjoy your return to the right type of CV.
