My girlfriend has been diagnosed stage 2 grade 3 breast cancer. She’s waiting to start treatment but for the last couple days she’s had pain in her armpit which is excruciating and causing tingling down her arm. She has phoned 111 and they’ve gave a stronger painkiller but it’s not really helping and they are only doing video consultations apparently. Nothing seems to be helping can anyone recommend ways to help ease the pain?

thank you

  • Good morning ....

I'm sorry you both have this extra worry. If she is waiting for treatment ...I'm assuming that this isn't post operative? If it were....exercises do help.

However, in your situation I think I would either phone 111 again and say the painkillers haven't worked or go to AE. I don't think I would ignore this pain just in case it is not connected to the cancer. Sometimes we do get aches and stabbing pains which come and go and may  be connected to worry but your friend needs to have all the physical possibilities eliminated first.

I hope you get some attention soon and also the treatment for the cancer can begin.

    Love Karen

  • Around the time of my diagnosis I would wake with 3 fingers on my left hand numb.  I wondered I'd it could have been either thr Timor pressing on a nerve running down or my 1 positive node affecting either thr lymph channels or nerves.  It went away after surgery though.

She should have a contact number for her breast nurse, can fairly quickly pass messages onto her surgeon or oncologist. If the poison is new they el want to know about it,  and be the best person to speak to add it may affect her treatment plan.  Do you know what kind of breast  cancer she has yet (ER+, HER2+/-, triple negative? ER+ usually means surgery first and the others are usually chemo first.

The early part of diagnosis and treatment is ther most stressful,  but she's stage 2 which is considered early stage BC,  which is good:)

Thank you Karen I will tell her when she wakes up as she’s managed to get back to sleep. She’s a career and can be a bit stubborn but she thinks there might be an infection but the dr thinks it’s just muscular but that was done via video call

  • Hi Danbull.  I had biopsies done over a month ago and am still getting a shooting pain in my breast as they caught a nerve when they did them.  If she had biopsies done in her lymph nodes this may be the problem.  If you are concerned, speak to the breast cancer nurses and they can reassure or refer her to the correct places for investigation.  Your girlfriend is very lucky to have you by her side.

This was my boyfriend asking and he's been pretty amazing. I'm still in pain I've now got antibiotics so hoping this helps. Not been checked by doctor just been over video link. I was diagnosed with stage 2 grade 3 invasive ductal cancer. Waiting to start my chemotherapy. Thank you for your replies.
