Changing chemo regime

Hello all

Next week is my 6th session of chemo where they give me four drugs - Doxetal, carboplatin, Pertruzamab and Herceptin which I am having every three weeks for my HER+ breast cancer.  My op is scheduled for 4th December and after that, and some radiotherapy, I hope to drop down to just Herceptin for another 11 sessions (every three weeks).  The side effects of the four drugs haven't been pleasant but they have been manageable but, like all of you, I am fed up of feeling less than 100% all of the time.  Although my side effects only really kick in from about day 4 to 11 of the 21 day cycle, the feeling of "being under the weather" seems to be lasting longer into the cycle.  I can happily cope with that as I only have one more "biggie" to go but am wondering whether anyone else has gone from the big 4 down to just Herceptin and whether the side effects stay debilitating or whether they become much less.  Excited to nearly be on the next stage of my journey and ready to deal with whatever it throws at me, just mildly hopeful that I might get my mojo (and my tastebuds) back sooner rather than later.

  • Hi Bev

Chemotherapy is not easy and I’d guess that most of us would say it’s the worst part of our treatment.  Although I had a different chemo drug to you, I too found that the side effects got longer as the weeks went on, but you’ll be pleased to hear that being on just Herceptin has been a breeze in comparison. I’m not even sure I get any side effects from it at all.  So hopefully once no6 is dealt with next week you can look forward to feeling much better and also getting your tastebuds back!

Wishing you best for the rest of your treatment Slight smile

  • Hi

When you finish chemo it will take a few weeks for your body to get back to normal - my toenails fell out six months after I finished. Herceptin isn’t chemo and has very few side effects, you will be getting regular scans of your heart , and there are also one or two other side effects (runny nose being one of them) I worked next door to the hospital and just went for my injections during my working day , no real  issues at all.

    best wishes

  • Thanks for the reassurance Jo.  I seem to have a constantly runny nose at the moment, no joke when you have a sore nose or are wearing a mask!  I am becoming an expert at wiping my nose without removing the mask.  Just looking forward to the next phase.  It makes me feel closer to the finish line.  Stay strong and positive.  Sending hugs x

Hi Bev my story is on profile .  I HAD 6x EC which was very cumulative after no 4 so by 5 & 6 no gap in SE . Then after finishing in Dec three weeks later started my herceptin regime three weekly x 18 .

After chemo herceptin feels like a breeze SE slightly flue like bit of dry cough neither of which are helpful with Covid around lol Joy I've also had some pain in legs but manageable . Feel a lot fitter than at the end of chemo but not back to what I was .. think restrictions of being shielded from March til July hasn't helped .

I also get bisphosonate infusion ( Zoledronic acid ) every six month for at least three year . It takes 8/12 weeks for chemo to leave your system I was just feeling I'd got there when shielded !

Great when your taste buds return . The op is a doddle after chemo just remember a mastectomy is major surgery . Also the exercises are a must .

    take care

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • Thank you my lovely.  Already on Alendronic acid as I was diagnosed with osteopaenia about 7 years ago so I amused to that and the calcium tablets that are the size of a dinner plate Slight smile  Goodluck with all you are going through.

My motto is "Keep your face to the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you"  difficult sometimes but it works most of the time xx
