I managed to crack a tooth eating popcorn today. My last chemo session (docetaxel) was September 17 so I'm in the third week of the cycle. It was my last session so at least I don't have to worry about that, but I assume my immune system is still pretty low. I'm not on any other medication at the moment.
Does anyone know what shielding and chemo might mean for an urgent dentists appointment?
I’m in a similar (but not chemo related) situation (Broke the side of a tooth eating lasagne!) and have an emergency appointment tomorrow. Your dentist should be wearing PPE anyway so if your surgery is anything like mine, they will arrange that you don’t wait in a waiting room but get admitted when the dentist is ready to see you.
I recommend you phone your dentist tomorrow, and ask them about their procedure.

Hi m123
I did that too! a bit of tooth broke off while eating popcorn (love it can't stop eating it)
I rang my dentist and they managed to fit me in the same day, they told me to ring when I was outside the building and I was taken straight into see my dentist like Moomy says.
They wore the clear face masks and the mouth masks throughout the surgery. All he could do was file the tooth down so there wasn't a sharp edge and made it more comfortable. I'm on immunotherapy tablets so they couldn't really do much more than they did.
I chew very gently now when eating popcorn :) xx
I’m all sorted, too.
VERY Covid efficient and safe feeling, I’ve had a temporary filling and special covering put in place and will have an appointment arranged by phone for a replacement filling.
You really shouldn’t feel concerned, dentists anyway were mostly wearing PPE before, they are very aware of potential problems.

Thanks for asking! It turns out that not only is dentistry + COVID complicated, and chemo + COVID complicated, dentistry + COVID + chemo is exponentially complicated. I've got antibiotics from NHS111 to deal with a potential gum infection, and a checkup next week to work out a treatment plan. The oncology unit didn't want me to venture out until the 4th week after my last chemo, so next week is the earliest I could see anyone anyway.
I can't have zometa (bisphosphonate medicine) within 8 weeks of dental treatment so I don't know if that means I might have to delay starting goserelin and exemestane if it takes a while to sort the tooth.
It's quite a bad break in the tooth - the back corner under an onlay came off and the break goes into the gum line. I guess I'll find out next week what my options are.
At least now I can get on with my usual slight dread of the dentist instead of worrying about COVID!
xx
Glad you’ve some answers, it is complex, isn’t it?
I hope your assessment and treatment can be easily done, and totally get your fear, it’s awful isn’t it?
I was scared my break was all the way through into the root as it has happened before, with the only tooth I’ve lost (apart from wisdoms). My problem with extractions is that I’ve been on bisphosphanates for a long time as I had osteoporosis prior to bc.
So I think and hope i just need a medium sized filling replacing from amalgam to white, and a quarter of one side building up. That presumably will mean the drill being cooled (liquids spraying) which I know is one thing dentists are worrying about.

A friend who's been to the dentist recently said the dentist was practically in a hazmat suit, and that everything in the room was covered in plastic, and I think that was just for a check up, so I can't imagine how nervous dentists must be about anything that requires the spray. I guess I'll find out more next week.
Good luck with your treatment! xx
