Hello Newbie here, Trish9a. Breast Conserving and sentinel node surgery recently.

Left this ask for advice a bit late but I am getting spooked about my 'results/planning' consultation tomorrow afternoon.

I have been very well cared for at hospital and home and have been amazingly calm throughout so this nervousness is unusual for me ( though absolutely normal).

I am going in armed with brief info about possible treatment (Radio, chemo, hormonal) BUT should I sit, listen and nod OR ask lots of questions?!

  • HI @Trisha9a, My advice would be some of each; that is listen carefully and make notes as you go (I found this most helpful afterwards) and go with a list of particular questions you want advice on if the consultant hasn't already answered them. In my case at the end of March  this year the Consultant covered them and the breast cancer nurse was able to explain further minor details afterwards. I think it is fairly standard for BCN to be present at the result/ planning meeting.I am sure you will be given booklets about the treatments planned for you - this is where your notes will be invaluable for reference to precise wording. You may hear terminology that you are not familiar with, but hopefully everything should be explained in terms you can understand. Don't be overawed by the occasion and ask as many questions as you wish.

I had the same operation as you and all is now fully healed and I've had radiotherapy course(in my case 5 sessions.I am now taking Letrozole for at least 5 years. I hope all goes well for you tomorrow and please let us know how it went.I am sure others will be along to offer further advice. You will be in my thoughts .Sending big hugs xxKwissy

  • Hi Trish9a

Not much I can say as Kwissy’s advice is spot on.

But as someone who usually attends her appointments with 2 x A4 sheets of questions, I’d say ask as many as you like!  I’ve never been felt rushed by any of my consultants who would rather know that you’ve understood everything. And there’s nothing worse than leaving the room wishing you’d asked something!

Otherwise rather than take notes if you’re on your own, use your phone to record your consultation as there’s always bits you’ve missed whilst trying to scribble everything down. I do this then transcribe it when I get home - invaluable now I’m not allowed to take a friend due to Covid.

Wishing all the best for tomorrow!

    Loffie xx

  • Hi  , I wish I'd thought of recording the conversation at my consultation, although my notes were very useful if not in my best handwriting!! I wish you all the best on your cancer journey. Hugs xx
