Hi, I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and have already had a Lumpectomy and lymph nodes removed from under arm one week ago. My wound under arm has an area at the end that does not appear to have closed properly.. it has also been leaking a very pale pink fluid. It is not obmverly painful or red and I do not feel ill. I put a dry sterile dressing on it yesterday but overstretched my arm last night, felt a pop and had a quick flow of the same colour discharge from it, soaking the dressing and a small area of the top I was wearing. Is this normal?
Contact your breast care nurse. You may have to have it manipulated especially as felt a pop. Sounds like pulled something.
You need to contact your hospital ward and get checked. I had Lumpectomy and lymph nodes removed on 4,th March this year. I was discharged with a drain. I had leaks and when I phoned to ask if it was normal - they called me in to check it.
Any doubts at all about your wound or leaks - you must phone your ward or breast care nurse about anything wound related especially so very close to your surgery date and hospital discharge.
Gentle hugs to you x
UPDATE
I contacted the BC Nurse... she asked me to go up to hospital today, I had a swab taken, wound cleaned, debated over a further suture being added, left it as is and gave me a course of antibiotics. I have to return for a chrck up next week.
Thank you for replying, it was the push I needed. I never know if I am overreacting or not.
Hi - remember you have had a cancer diagnosis and major surgery. Your breast care team and breast care nurses are there to help and support you. The idea of your breast care nurse is that she is there to answer any questions or worries, no matter how big or small (especially when you have just had surgery and are fretting about your surgery wounds). Don't be frightened to pick up the phone and ask your BCN or cancer team questions at any time.
One day just after my op I felt so down, stressed and scared I left a message on my BCN answerphone - she phoned me back within an hour and she just listened to me and offered support for nearly an hour!
Gentle hugs to you x
