Hello
I was diagnosed with HER+, ER Negative Breast Cancer in 2016. I had a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and herceptin. (Thankfully still in remission).
I find myself here again as my 87 year old Mum was diagnosed with ER positive breast cancer yesterday.
It seems quite a lot has changed in the last ten years and my memory isn't as good as it used to be. I'm trying to help my Mum find a suitable bra for after her lumpectomy in 10 days time.
Can anyone recommend anything that they used please? Things are happening so fast and her Breast Care Nurse wasn't that helpful when I asked her.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Soulgal ,
so sorry to hear about your mumlsxduagnisis . It’s a lot to deal with .
i had surgery for breast cancer in 2023 and radiotherapy . I couldn’t tolerate the hormone therapy so keeping fingers crossed .
I found the best bras for me - large breasted and 71 at the time - were some I got from Cancer Research . The were nice soft material , fastening at the front and I wore them day and night for good support. I still have them in case I ever need them again .
Hope this helps and best wishes for your mum’s surgery and recovery .

Hi pingwing
Thanks so much for your reply, that's really helpful. I'll have a look at them. I had umpteen bras after my lumpectomy, from sports bras to nursing bras (spent a fortune!) but I no longer have them.
My Mum has lost a lot of weight (from size 16 to size 10/12) in the past year which I'm obviously worried about.
Obviously I didn't have hormone therapy as I was ER negative but I have friends and neighbours who were/are on it so I'm aware of the side effects. I think you have to weigh up the pros and cons of the treatment versus the side effects. Having gone through treatment and then being in constant pain from hormone therapy would seriously affect your quality of life. I know quite a few people who couldn't tolerate it either.
Thank you for your kind words.

Hi, hope your mum is doing ok. I found M&S post surgery bras to be pretty comfy. Also their crop tops were soft and good for extra support at night. Best wishes
Seconding the M&S post surgery bra which i practically lived in after my lumpectomy on 16th Feb. Super comfy and very supportive, so I felt "protected ". They're about £25 per bra. I bought two.

Hello, I have just been discharged after Lumpectomy and axillary nodes excision. The lovely nurses on the ward I was put on after my op measured me and fitted me with a very soft, front fastening sports type bra to support my breasts and protect my wounds dressings. The ward should have a stock if them. The nurses on the ward after your Mum's op might be more helpful and you ask them questions. My breast care nurse is lovely and really helpful. I'm very surprised that given your Mum's age, your Mum's breast care nurse doesn't seem very supportive. I wish your Mum best wishes for her op and her post o recovery and you gentle hugs because I know the stress you will be going through too xx
Hi soulgal
Sorry to hear about your mum. After my lumpectomy I used a Royce front popper fastening bra. I am a 36b so probably a similar size to your mum? Hopefully enough suggestions from us all to find what will suit her. Wishing you both well and hope it’s all as straightforward as possible.
Re hormone therapy, I have recently finished 7 years on anastrrozole. I hated it for lots of reasons, including that I retired early as a result but found I could cope so much better when I didn’t have to work. And I wanted to do all I could to help reduce my chance of recurrence. Can’t believe I made it to 7 years! But in the end it’s an individual experience and choice. Love and hugs, HFxx
Thank you all for your kind words and helpful suggestions.
I must admit I'm struggling quite badly with all of this, I have mental health problems. I coped much better with my own diagnosis.
I've made a post surgery bra fitting appointment at M&S on Tuesday so hopefully we will get some help and support there.
Wishing you all well in your recovery.
Best Wishes
